Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Teases New Battletoads Game

phil spencer battletoads 01-21-15-1

Previously, we got word of a potential Battletoads remake of sorts by the Microsoft-owned developer Rare.

First there was the trademark and first tease from Xbox boss Phil Spencer, and more recently Microsoft Studios’ Creative Director, Ken Lobb, said the company “has plans” for older series like Battletoads (among others).

Now, Battletoads is being hinted at yet again, but this time it’s much more subtle. Featured above, you can view a shot of Spencer in today’s Windows 10 keynote, rocking a Battletoads-emblazoned shirt.

If you’ve ever followed his appearances at Microsoft press conferences, you’ll know that his previous shirts have teased at things which are confirmed/revealed later. He previously wore Capybara Games, Press Play Studios, and State of Decay t-shirts at the 2013 E3 expo (he alternated), all of which got Xbox One announcements. During last year’s E3, he wore a Limbo t-shirt, a game which came to Xbox One later that year.

When he spoke to GameSpot regarding the Battletoads t-shirt’s authenticity, he let out another tease:

“I don’t think I’ve ever worn a t-shirt that’s been a complete head-fake. I wouldn’t do that.”

So could we be getting a reveal at their E3 press conference? Would you like to see a Battletoads remake?

Never got the chance to play Battletoads but from what I’ve heard of it, it needs to be as mindnumbingly difficult as it was before for any remake or sequel to be successful.

Calling it now. It’s a gritty reboot with Arkham Asylum combat except it controls like shit and requires Kinect, though those two things go hand in hand,

Thing is, they’d NEVER be able to make a real Battletoads game. That is, unforgivingly difficult. Their AAA design philosophy rejects it.

With Rare a shell of its former self, most likely. Does anyone else think that they should just go all-out in their current infamy and try competing with Hudson for the title of worst reboot ever?

After Sunset Overdrive success, and many other fun beat’em ups coming, like the new River City Ransom, I believe this game can be just, well, colorful and funny.

Frankly, Battletoads was fun to play, it was funny, it had a nice nsoundtrack. But the difficulty was really more of a broken thing. But ifn they want to bring difficult back, they can, just let us hit our npartners, create sections were one mistake costs a life… They don’t nneed to recreate the NES Battletoads, they could go more like the arcade version. Give us a fun brawler, with some crazy sections and it will work just fine. Later, they can release the Double Dragon expansion.
