Following the brand new trailer for Square Enix’s upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One RPG, Final Fantasy XV, the newly appointed director Hajime Tabata sat down for an interview with 4Gamer where he discussed the characters, story, and so on.
4Gamer naturally posed the question, Just how far into development is Final Fantasy XV? They mentioned how the trailer was very impressive, and that progress is definitely evident.
“We currently feel like it’s around 50-55% percent. The basic systems and parts are more or less implemented, and you won’t have to wait another five or ten years after the release of the demo, so don’t worry … [laughs] If the demo isn’t enjoyed by our fans, we’ll have to shake things up.”
4Gamer asked if it would be appropriate to call Final Fantasy XV an open world RPG, to which Tabata replied:
“If we’re talking about how the world is seamlessly connected, then yes, that’s correct. The story unfolds as you ride around in a car and go on an adventure.”
The representative from 4Gamer also made a personal note of saying the trailer felt somewhat like a “road movie”, i.e. a story where the main character(s) leave home to go on a trip which ends up changing their lives/perspective on life. In the story of Final Fantasy XV, Prince Noctis is on the run with his friends, which Tabata seemingly echoed:
“Precisely, we’re crafting the game to be a road movie, while still being able to experience it as a role playing game. You’ll be able to feel the emotions associated with going on a trip together.”
Next up, a point was made that in both the trailer and the gameplay shown off for the game, it seemed that only male characters were playable and/or in the main group surrounding Noctis. This was followed up by saying that the only females seen thus far have been in cutscenes.
“The main party will have only male characters and companions,” Tabata said. “That hasn’t changed since the original vision of the game, seen in Final Fantasy Versus XIII.”
In case you missed it, a brand new trailer for the game was shown of at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Final Fantasy XV is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
