Twitch Plays Pokemon has become a viral hit, spanning memes, fan art, and a dedicated following of tens of thousands of viewers. The original broadcast that showcased a playthrough of Pokemon Red has since concluded, but a new one has been started for Pokemon Crystal.
This new playthrough has begun under the anarchy voting system, meaning any input command that is posted into the stream’s chat will immediately be translated into directional movements or battle commands in game. As one would expect, with thousands of people all submitting commands, this leads to a lot of walking in circles, or moving in place.
The original broadcast was finished after more than 16 days of democratic voting and total anarchy. It makes one wonder – if other games could be played in a similar fashion, or if such a model is even feasible for non-turn based games.
