Drakengard 3 Director Wants the Fourth Game on PS4, but Sadly Lacks the Funding

drakengard 3 ss 2

The director of Drakengard 3, Taro Yoko, is quite a mysterious man. For one, he doesn’t like having his picture taken publicly (as seen by the censoring of himself in various press releases), but he’s also the driving force behind some of the most polarizing games across two console generations.

Drakengard 1+2 and their spin-off Nier were definitely not universally praised, both sitting around roughly 50-60 out of 100 on Metacritic. Obviously, this is definitely not the kind of judgement the staff at Niche Gamer agree with, but the series is getting a prequel – almost despite all odds.

Coming from this, the recent launch of Drakengard 3 in Japan saw over a hundred thousand units sold within a very short amount of time, easily a very strong sign of promise that the series still holds weight. The game is coming to North America and Europe sometime this year, and yet fans are already asking if the series will see a fourth entry:

What you can see above is a fan asking the game’s director if there will be a fourth game on the Playstation 4. Shockingly, Yoko-san responded with almost brutal honesty, saying that he wants to make a fourth game on PS4, but he lacks the funding.

Normally you don’t see this, at least not publicly, so it could be a sign that Square Enix is once again giving the Drakengard/Nier series the cold shoulder in terms of development funding. Sadly, despite many fans instantly suggesting taking the project to Kickstarter, Square Enix holds the rights to the franchise, and I doubt we’ll ever see the company take to crowd-funding, at least not for a long time.

While it’s sad to see that a new game in the series might not be possible – there is still hope left so long as Drakengard 3’s sales continue to impress. If you’re a fan of the series, make sure you support the game when it comes out via buying ten copies, EACH! I’m kidding, you just need to buy one.
