Valkyria Chronicles 4 Announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch – Set for Worldwide 2018 Release

Sega has announced Valkyria Chronicles 4 following their teaser website last week.

The latest in their tactical action series will launch across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. Featured above, you can view a new teaser trailer for the game.

A worldwide release is set for sometime next year, while the Japanese release is only for PlayStation 4 and Switch. Here’s the first artwork, screenshots, and a look at the two protagonists:

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Sega:

Soldiers, strategists, and commanders–the call has come in from the front lines. It’s time to rejoin the fight! The beloved Valkyria Chronicles series makes its grand return westward in 2018 with Valkyria Chronicles 4, a new mainline chapter in the saga for PlayStation®4, Nintendo Switch™, and Xbox One™. Return to a continent ravaged by conflict with a familiar-yet-refined tactical RPG battle system, a vibrant and evocative art style that portrays a living canvas of watercolors, and a gripping World War II-inspired story full of momentous triumphs, heartbreaking loss, and unexpected hope for the human spirit.

It is the year 1935 EC…

The continent of Europa is engulfed in the flames of the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire’s forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them. With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war.

Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation’s success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria… and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Features:

  • A Coming-of-Age Story in a Time of WarValkyria Chronicles 4 takes place in the same timeframe as the original Valkyria Chronicles, but focuses on a whole new cast of main characters. Players will take command of the eager, young Commander Claude Wallace, engineer/heavy weapons extraordinaire Riley Miller, hotheaded Darcsen Raz, ice-cold ace sniper Kai Schulen, and more. Together, they will experience the painful realities of war–but will the bonds of Squad E’s friendships survive the frozen battlefield?
  • The Next Generation “BLiTZ” Battle System – The part overhead turn-based strategy, part RPG, and part real-time 3rd person shooter “BLiTZ” battle system returns to the field. New features include an explosive new class called the Grenadier, numerous offensive/defensive battleship support options, chances for a unit to have a “Last Stand” action before death, and more. Plus, fight the imperial threat with more units on larger-scale maps than ever before.
  • CANVAS Aesthetics – The series’ signature hand-drawn visual style is back and overhauled for the newest generation. Inspired by watercolor compositions, the CANVAS Graphics Engine blends visual elements of reality and imagination to create an expressive world filled with colorful emotions. Watch the journey of Squad E unfold like an interactive painting!
  • The Return of a Legendary Composer – The illustrious Hitoshi Sakimoto, original composer of the Valkyria Chronicles series and countless other emotional epics, returns to provide a sweeping orchestral soundtrack for the game.

  • Chili

    ChocolateISISCream don’t even start

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

Huh, wonder if I should get it on the PS Quads or the Switch

  • … You know me. ;)

  • Anon_Amous

    Piracy couldn’t kill Valkyria!

  • Gale

I’m excited, but biding my hype because I don’t want to get hype and then see a future trailer with giant meme swords or whatever.

If they don’t go full retard this time I’ll buy it day one.

  • Miguel Angel Opazo Arancibia

I want a localized Valkyria Chronicles 3. That sure was a great game.

  • Loli ♥ Antagonist

Last I heard, they were marketing the VC games more to Fujoshi than Otaku. This seems like it’s still case. So probably a pass, for me.

  • Person Man

The fan translation effort is more than acceptable. Barring very minuscule DLC.

  • CRES

OH MY GOD! I AM SO HYPED FOR THIS GAME!!

Even if it is only a faction of the brilliance of Valkyria Chronicles 1, it is still a miracle that we will get this game!

  • This game? I don’t know, but I didn’t see any Fujoshi, here. :/

  • CRES

With the amount of “fan feedback” Revolution got, I doubt they will stray too far from the VC formula this time around.

  • Person Man

I hate the stupid horns on the girl, but, modern SRPG. Can’t at least be a bit excited, even if the latest game was pretty bad.

  • Anon630

I didn’t even know there was a 3 because it was so low profile. You’d figure with the success of the first, they’d keep it on mainstream platforms and keep the gravy train rolling.

  • Michael Richardson

Awesome! The PC remaster has been in my backlog for years. Time to dig in.

  • bdp

Probably come to pc in the summer or something though i may grab the switch version if it isn’t terrible.

  • Matz

Finally a real sequel for Valkyria Chronicles using a serious story and retaking the gorgeous art style of the first game, I guess the people at SEGA learned from their mistakes… except for one, why the fuck are we getting a Xbox One version instead of a PC one?

A PS4 version is reasonable since the series has always been on Sony consoles, putting the game on Switch version is also a good choice since it’s quite popular and Japanese people prefer portable games… but Xbox version? I guess that they want to reach Western fans but PC is a much better platform if they want to reach western players

  • One or two years from now, you might be right. :/

  • Miguel Angel Opazo Arancibia

It seemed like something interesing actually and worth reading.

Then again, the game was great, making a proper pc release would allow more people to enjoy it.

  • Miguel Angel Opazo Arancibia

Agreed. Pc is the way to go. Then again, it might have to do with some exclusivity clause to keep it on consoles for a year or so.

  • Fandangle

I too am excited for the version of the game that is riddled with DRM.

  • Zack Attack

I’m very excited for the Switch Version, but why isn’t there a Steam version? 😣

  • Zack Attack

I’m predicting that Both ISIS and Travis are going to start real soon. Oh well at least we will laugh at them being stupid.

  • Sega is being retarded again. Their is no reason why this isn’t on PC seeing how VC sold best on PC. Sega is dumb as fuck.

  • What do you mean? No one would pirate a shitty game like Valkyria Revolution.

  • SuuLoliBoob

    One word. Pirates.

  • sanic

Damn it more reasons to live.

  • Considering what SEGA does to PC ports…

  • Malascus

    ooooh fuck yes!

  • Baron Krause

Naa there is too many consoles its being released on, there isn’t some console consortium that forms deals to keep things off PC.

  • DeadSF

    just fucking take my money.

  • Balrer

I hadn’t played since the first one. It looks good but I’m guessing they balanced the Scout class in 2 and 3?

  • Uncle Ocelot

This looks amazing, it being on the Switch is a perfect fit too. I like the doggo too.

  • BFG

    Took them long enough though

  • Vincent

Man, I am so excited for this.

  • Vincent

Shocktrooper dominates in 2 but everything is balanced in 3

  • Audie Bakerson

Wasn’t the PC port’s success what caused them to actually care about the series again?

  • KenAyagami

I believe nowadays PC version seems to be their answer for milking the series, usually they make it a console release.. and release on the PC years after when the sales of the console version dies down.. at least their doing this on the VIta, most of the game is getting a steam version most of them used to be Vita exclusive

  • KenAyagami

nah… probably years after the hype dies down.. at least thats what I’m expecting

  • KenAyagami

I think the fan translation already did a great job, sorry not a big fan of remaster if the game still looks pretty decent

  • KenAyagami

Not really, their pretty smart actually, the games definitely going to sell like crazy if there’s no game breaking bug or etc.. than they can resell the game after a few years on the PC version with better graphic.. and it’s still going to sell like crazy

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

What a pleasant surprise, but damn how I wish I could play it now.

  • PaRaLLaXTHeTiCS

But everything else about her looks on point tho

  • SevTheBear

Pirate games ain’t that big of a problem. They would love to let you think it is, but it’s not. But one thing is for sure. The console marked is MUCH BIGGER than PC. So it makes sense for them to focus on the console platforms first

  • Klarktastic

Yeah but it didn’t get a proper official western release tho.

  • BFG

Do you even understand that the main audience is japanese right?

  • BFG

Japanese folks arent too fond of PC gaming either

  • Sean Sharpe

    The important question…

Are they going to kill the dog? ’cause that would suck.

  • iswear12

Eh? Valkyria Chronicles 1 was a great port all things considered.

  • 2501

Wow that’s a surprise, i never thought we would see another VC game considering the bad decisions Sega did with VC2 & 3. I hope this means that this takes more cues from the original game then.

  • iswear12

    fucking hell Sega

  • iswear12

Overall this is a good thing. I think the game will end up being good but we’ll have to see. Its unfortunate its not getting a PC port but we’ll see how long they take. Hopefully its not more than a year though, and it better not fucking have Denuvo.

  • Mr0303

Looks great. Them incorporating the Russian winter into a Valkyria is bad news for the Federation. I do hope Sega localises this in a timely matter, or if they are to take their time at least give us VC3.

  • Naa

Graphically disappointing. Could have easily been a PS3 DLC.

  • KenAyagami

Well they makes games to earn money.. what do you expect.. haha

  • KenAyagami

Ya.. seeing how VC2 flop so badly.. but at the very least you still have access to it.. so it’s not all nice.. but at least it’s something

  • Kosac07

Japanese have a real problem taking advice from others and getting out of their pre-set ways in general. Hardworking, but not the brightest of people…

  • BFG

I would take more pride on using machines made by my own country if i were japanese too

  • catazxy

    I like the girl’s horns..

  • SevTheBear

The horns looks a bit silly. But besides that, I like the art style as it was in the original.

  • SevTheBear

Yeah, handheld gaming is top dog and consoles second. PC just don’t cut it in Japan. PC gaming is great, but for many it just ain’t the best choice.

  • SevTheBear

Handheld and console is just bigger in Japan + consoles is a locked environment, which makes the top happier.

  • catazxy

I’m a bit sad about the missing PC port (for now at least), but I’m glad they finally announced a real VC sequel.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    PC cucked yet again lmfao

  • Zack Attack

Correct me if I’m wrong bet I’m very positive that the remastered first one was on Steam. So they need to being it on there. FYI Sega really is retarded if they are bringing it on Xbox One and even Switch (I’m excited for that port) before Steam.

  • BFG

It’s a japanese game made by japanese folks for the japanese audience firstmost. How is that hard to understand?

Remastered version of VCI was released first on PS4 in Japan in 2016, 2 months before the western release. You’re probably confusing with the Windows version released on 2014 for a PS3 game from 2008.

  • NeoSkyte

Well yeah but recently Sega has been adding Denuvo DRM to all of their PC ports as seen with Sonic Mania, Sonic Forces and I believe the latest Total War.

  • NeoSkyte

I don’t mind if they delay it another year as long as we get a quality Valkyria Chronicles game.

  • Lea Pastillaroja

who the fuck are they gonna reach with an Xbone version
does anyone besides gulible EA tier consummers and M$ shills actually own the console?

  • Shocker Rider GG

i hope it fuckng comes to steam, after all ¿ didnt sega themselves wanted to be a strong party in the pc market ?

  • Shocker Rider GG

what makes no sense is the xbone port since that console is less popular than herpes in japan

  • Shocker Rider GG

in that case there shouldnt be making an xbone port since the xbox brand barely sells in japan

  • Shocker Rider GG

    bullshit

  • Shocker Rider GG

then why the hell are they making an xbone port that console barely sells there

  • Shocker Rider GG

if there is a plattaform that helps to sell games in occident and cheaper due to the cut of physical media is pc
i am not denying that this games sell on ps4 and switch but they also sell on pc

  • Klarktastic

Pretty sure that was because they released it on the psp instead of the ps3

  • Chili

This is an announcement for a worldwide release and includes the Xbone, which also isn’t a Japanese oriented platform

  • DrearierSpider

Seems that way with new games at least. Bayo & Vanquish had no added DRM though.

  • DrearierSpider

Careful ISIS, remember how many tampons you went through when Nioh got a late port? It’ll happen eventually.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    DrearierSpider . 6 minutes ago
    [crying louadly]

  • Chocolate ISISCream

I hope this doesn’t get release on PC

  • Chocolate ISISCream

Where are you located faggot? So I could lick and taste your delicious pcuck tears.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

This. PC installbase is just nude modders and pirates. They don’t actually play their games either, they just buy it during a humble bundle sale and let it sit in their digital only library.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

It’ll be Denuvo. Just buy it on PS4 where its DRM free.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

“Sega is dumb as fuck for not releasing it on MY platform of choice. Fuck them for releasing it on platforms where it sell the most!”
Sega is smart. There will be barely any profit yield on your platform due to the increasingly large number of pirates and steam sales fags.

Not to mention, these games are never “good enough” for you elitist fucks and feel the need to mod the game and say “I did a better job then these incompetent fucking devs.”

  • Mea K

    Yes!

  • DrearierSpider

Nah, I have a huge backlog. No issues waiting for a port, especially considering late ports are always cheaper and come with all the DLC. Tell me, what do you find so alluring about peasantry?

  • Mr0303

And a couple of other regular PC fanboys.

  • Person Man

You do realize that most consoles are inherently DRM, right? Especially if you get the digital version. It is much easier to circumvent DRM on PCs.

  • BFG

My bad, but 2018 is a broad release date, I suppose western version will release later on to the jap ones

And the Xbone version is probably to take a piss at gaijins too.

  • Travis Touchdown

PC is gaming is dead. Has been for years.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Switch version is best version.

  • Exien

gaming never existed, since the birth of the universe. Was that right and can I now get my cookie for this useless comment ?

  • Anon_Amous

Revolution isn’t a Chronicles, it’s right there in the name.

  • stullz

    Try harder trolls. :)

  • SevTheBear

    Money talks I guess

  • SevTheBear

    true. It’s weird indeed

  • MusouTensei

I wish they’d port 2&3 to home consoles.

  • Looking at more modern games, where the DRM the shit out of them

  • JohnnyCageFan2

4th year straight. You did it again SEGA!

By the way, the glint, shape, and pupils, of the Chiquita’s eyes look like Tony’s work and not RAITA’s. Could be wrong.

  • I know Vita gamers always pirate their games but even they have standards.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

Lol you can’t even deny it.

  • Sega has always hated money as PC is their most profitable platform. But at least they dropped Vita as all those guys are pirates.

  • You do understand that VC1 sold more on PC than Vita right?

  • Who will be dumb enough to buy the worse version of the game?

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    >PC is their most profitable platform
I’m sorry but that’s just baseless conjecture.

  • Vita is dead.

  • only the Wii U AND vita is dead.

  • Don’t forget BFG. Love his comments.

  • Don’t forget BFG. Love his foolishness.

  • Yeah they are being retarded.

  • more likely to come to PC though emulation.

  • 30fps.

  • Still salty I see. XD

  • stullz

Tell that to my recent 30 hours replaying shinovi versus on pc. :) Or my second playthrough of Trails of Cold Steel (1st on ps3) :p

  • BFG

I hope you’re aware the vita didnt even exist back then

  • Cats736

Likely to be increased in CEMU.

  • Cats736

Nothing that a crack can’t fix.

Console game, DRM free. You so funny, ISIS-chan~

  • Cats736

Still spouting nonsense I see. You’re like Travis Touchdown in that regard.

  • totenglocke

Funny, seeing how the previous one that was ported to PC had no DRM.

  • catazxy

Being a low lvl troll for so long rotted your brain. VC1 sold great on pc.
    https://steamspy.com/app/294860

  • Leandro Teixeira

For people that know moonrunes and don’t want to wait for the WW release http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=GAME-0019317

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    100000 owners, only 2000 players.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

1 million sales at 19.99 each, with a 30% cut on each sale? That’s not “great” at all.

  • catazxy

It smashed sega’s expectation either way, we are talking about a 2008 niche turn-based anime game, with 0 marketing behind it. But common sense is not your strong point….

  • RichardGristle

Says increasingly nervous console player for the 5th time this year.

  • RichardGristle

But I can. It’s called “Gallian Crossfire”.

Cup my balls while you’re down there :^)

  • Malcolm_Ecks

Stop. You’re dreams will die like Charles Manson just did.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

This is the real Valkiria Chronicles 2 as far as I’m concerned.

  • RichardGristle

Don’t even begin to pretend that you’d actually meet up with anyone LMFAO. That would require balls that you just don’t possess.

  • KenAyagami

That’s one thing.. but that’s not the main reason.. it’s most probably because they go for a school theme to appeal to the Japan market

  • KenAyagami

Worst version? You mean console version?

  • You didn’t know the Vita was dead? Where the hell has you been?

  • CEMU is a Wii U emulator not a Switch emulator. A Switch emulator will probably be here soon though.

  • MusouTensei

    …yay…

  • catazxy

These games were never about graphics, its the artstyle that counts

  • Adohleas

I think it might be longer, they still haven’t released Valkyria Azure Revolution for PC.

  • LEGIONARY1234

both of us know that the pc version its only matter of time faggot

  • LEGIONARY1234

in a few motnhs we will see what will hapen fag, the i ll be back to make you remember your error and your drems become shit like happeend with Trails of Cold Steel.

  • KenAyagami

well depending on the game your playing, I believe Japan is still supporting the Vita, but for Western developer vita is pretty much dead

  • KenAyagami

well I think they will release a PC port when the hype/sales dies down, that way they can earn money by selling the same product with better graphic as a selling point

  • Grampy_Bone

Please for Christ’s sake don’t make EXP dependent on finishing missions ridiculously fast.

  • BFG

Dont bother arguing with the troll (?) guy who believes handhelds are “for the socially inept” and needs to bring up the topic of Vita everywhere.

Nobody owning one is dismissing the handheld is “officially dead” for years (which is more a blessing considering the state of the industry and what Sony initially planned with it) even though we still got a nice range of games throughout its existence. Certainly some lost potential alongside it too (would have liked a few more ports of PS2 games and VNs) but oh well.

  • Envy-Noson

    It has begun

  • bdp

i don’t think anyone even wants that one though.

  • SLoWMoTIoN

Gotta wait out until they make some money before it goes to steam for sale for 10 dollars. Give it 2 years.

  • All consoles literally have HW-backed DRM

I’d say you’re a cunt but that’ll be rude to ’em

  • Grey

About damn time. Happy to see the story move away from Gallia and over to the Atlantic Federation at long last. Last three games made it seem like the entire war was about tiny not-Holland fighting the Empire when they were supposed to be a minor side battle to the main front.

Hope they do some rebalancing so scouts are less godlike and tanks are a bit more effective. By the looks Reily’s design, they change heavy weapons to a ‘haul and set up’ style, which always seemed like a better choice than just slow dudes with anti-tank lances.

  • JohnnyCageFan2

“It takes one to know one”, would be the common response. However in this case, you’re the only one.

    https://i.imgur.com/pLVFz9d.png

  • JohnnyCageFan2

I would certainly hope so since the original was never released on Vita.

  • Fandangle

Consoles at least have the excuse of running on different software, it’s more comparable to Mac versus windows.

The primary difference is if I’m gonna get a bad port of a game filled with drm I’d rather get it on consoles.and Sega hasn’t had the best track record lately.

  • I’m a retard for calling Sega out on their bullshit you Sony Slaves are desperate. Lol

  • PC beat the Vita and Switch killed the Vita. That’s why this or any future game will never come to the Shitty Vita. HA!

  • JohnnyCageFan2

While I feel that that my comments* have whipped you into a frenzy which now causes you to spout unrelated, misguided, as well as untrue nonsense, I will not take responsibility for your mental breakdown.

    * The two replies to you in this thread.

  • Person Man

A bad port can be fixed by the community on PC, just look at Dark Souls. A bad “port” on consoles (rather, an unoptimized and poorly coded game, if that’s what you’re talking about. Since you don’t “port” to something that you’re developing for) will be bad indefinitely, until emulation starts getting involved, and/or patches (Bomberman R is a good example).

I’m confused by your logic of software. So, just because they made some custom OS it’s cool that they apply DRM to everything?

  • The Vita is dead kid that is a fact. Even Square dropped that fag shit. HA!

  • Fandangle

That’s true but at that point if I’m going to put in the effort I’d rather just pirate it later if I get the desire to play it with better resolution or framerate. But that’s just my personal preference.

  • Person Man

That’s fair. I don’t mind putting in the effort to get the best experience, but if it’s too much at the time, I can always fall back to a much easier game to get running.

  • Shocker Rider GG

at least in pc you can mod

  • Scottie Thompson

Kind of surprised it’s making it’s way to the Xbox One. Good to see it hitting multiple consoles.

  • Cats736

That’s unfortunate, I could have sworn it was Switch.

  • Chino Gambino

God, this is all they had to do. Make a real game in the franchise and people will buy it, there are so many ways to innovate in a game like this without ruining it.

I hope they change the rating system so I’m playing missions past turn 1-2. I used shock troopers maybe twice in the whole game.
