John Carpenter Adores Sonic the Hedgehog Games, Including the One Where Sonic Transforms Into a Werewolf

This is Niche Culture. In this column, we regularly cover anime, geek culture, and things related to video games. Please leave feedback and let us know if there’s something you want us to cover!

Horror master, composer, and all-around auteur John Carpenter has been a fan of video games for decades now – a passion he has kept as a hobby alongside his professional work as a film director and composer. Now, we’ve learned what kicked off his love for video games.

Carpenter fell in love with the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis over 20 years ago, news he revealed in an interview with FACT.

“I loved the game. I loved everything about it. I especially loved the music,” Carpenter said to FACT. “There was something about the whole sound and feel of the Sonic games and suddenly I’m so much younger and it’s the ’90s.”

His love for the blue hedgehog didn’t end there, however.

“I even like the one where he turns into a werewolf,” he said. Carpenter is talking of course about Sonic Unleashed, the 2008 full-3D entry in the series that had traditional Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay during the day — but at night Sonic turned into the “werehog” and would brawl enemies.

Reportedly, he’s even played Sonic Mania, the throwback entry in the franchise released this past summer.

“Oh hell yeah,” he said when remarking on the game. “It took a while, these things are hard to beat.” He naturally wants more Sonic games. “I just keep wanting to play Sonic games — because they’re fun. I hope they keep making them.”

Make sure to check out the entire interview, where Carpenter also talks up the difficulty in the Sonic games, as well as the infamous underwater level.

Sonic Forces is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The precursor to Sonic ForcesSonic Mania, is also available now for PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. In case you missed it, you can find my review for that game here (I absolutely love and recommend the game!).

Well at least half of Unleashed is good.

Score one for the Sanic fanboys.

  • iswear12

    Michael Jackson loved Sonic too.
In fact he was the one who composed a sizable portion of music for Sonic 3. S’why it doesn’t get talked about as much by Sega despite arguably being the best of the 3 when combined with Sonic & Knuckles

  • randr01d

You can pretty much say Sonic is Michael Jackson.

  • randr01d

Veiled attempt to land the director role for the Sonic motion picture?

  • Sam XXX

    so… HLF3?

  • Uncle Ocelot

That’s nice. I remember hearing about him liking Rayman a while back too.

To be honest, the Werehog gameplay in Unleashed wasn’t awful (just an average GoW clone), but it was incredibly out of place, even for an alternate 3D Sonic playstyle and an enormous pace breaker. You’d play a Sonic level for about 5 minutes then a Werehog level for 30 and god help you if you didn’t collect enough medals.
The funny thing is that Sonic Team knew that most people probably wouldn’t like it, but included it anyway. They just couldn’t help themselves.

  • No one likes Sonic Boom.

  • Ruggarell

The werewolf sections of unleashed were so awful and the hub world sucks too. They were slower and longer than the traditional sonic levels my god.

  • SLoWMoTIoN

I already knew he was insane ok

  • Mr0303

Just for that they need to make a Sonic horror game collab with him PT style.

    This is the best timeline.

    “Horror master”
And yet he couldn’t scare little me when I was scared of the dark…

If Sonic 06 were not released much later than the movie itself, I would swear that the horror of playing it inspired “The Thing.”

  • Z3DH

Wonder what kind of donutsteel John Carpenter would make in Forces.

  • DukeMagus

    This is true horror…

I know it all too well. I’m a Mega Man Fan… mediocre decade, company killing the character, the foster father royally screwing up his only chance…

    Pure pain, pure horror

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Wish he would enter the world of gaming, hes made some of the best movies of the 80’s.

  • AgentBJ09

Nice. Glad to know he’s a fan of Unleashed.

That right there. Is a man of Culture

Unleashed is great. people exagerate the hate for Unleashed way too much.

  • Sam XXX

    Not even The Thing?

  • ProxyDoug

The show has it’s moments though.

  • Jack Thompson

But does he have good taste in horror Vidya?

    Commenting before watching the interview.

  • DrearierSpider

Hey, no ones perfect. The Thing is one of my all time favorite movies but the guy also did give us F.3.A.R.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Not even that; not even It.

  • InkBrush
  • Victor

I haven’t played a single Sonic game since the days of the Mega Drive, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart.
