Project Octopath Traveler Western Release Confirmed for 2018

Square Enix has confirmed a western release, new trailers, and more details about Project Octopath Traveler, the new game from the developers of Bravely Default.

As the name implies, Project Octopath Traveler follows eight different stories, with their own characters and worlds. A worldwide release is planned for sometime next year. Featured above, you can view a new trailer for the throwback RPG. An announcement trailer was also shared, which gives a nice overview of the title:

Finally, Square Enix confirmed a playable demo for the game, which is launching today for the eShop.

Here’s a rundown on the game:

Embark on a vast new role-playing adventure as one of eight travelers, all with their own origins, paths, and goals.

The producers of the Bravely series at Square Enix have brought a new world to life through a mix of CG, pixel art, and “HD-2D” visuals. Embark on a vast new role-playing adventure as one of eight travelers, all with their own origins, paths, and goals. Where to begin? Who to team up with? Where to go next? Only you can decide.

Each traveler can use a distinct Path Action, a specialized way of achieving objectives and interacting with people you encounter. The warrior can “challenge” people to a duel, whereas the dancer can “allure” others to follow her, even into battle! Enjoy the freedom to choose your own path while experiencing the story through the role you play. Combat revolves around the Boost system, a fusion of traditional turn-based battling and modern enhancements. Each turn, build up BP that can be spent to dramatically increase your strength or provide aid. Identifying when to Boost may just be the key to victory.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Wasn’t expecting there to be a demo.

  • NeoTechni

Looks gorgeous. Shame it’s on the wrong console.

  • The name is garbage, but I can’t wait. This looks like what Bravely Default would if it had the budget, direction, and system power it really needed.

  • Terra

They even trademarked the working title.

I’d love to play this, but there’s no way in hell I have time for a JRPG 90 hour experience. In that case it needs to be exceptionally good like Persona 5. It needs to be far above average, otherwise I’ll just play something that isn’t 70 hour long, but good, or something that is fucking amazing instead.

  • Demetirus

Thankfully it’s just a working title and not the final one. I’m confident they’ll come up with something better, though I know that’s a low bar to clear. XD

  • Koroma

    Gorgeous game

  • Mechonis

From the Bravely Default devs. No wonder it looks boring

  • patyos

    The Demo is AWESOME

  • Not really.
    -Octo – 8
    There are 8 Main Characters
    -Path – 8 Different Story
For Each of the 8 Characters
    -Traveler – 8 Travelers

    Not hard.
Just like Bravely Default – Basically battle system. Brave & Default

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

That still doesn’t make the name sound less awkward.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Finally, a JRPG i give a shit about

  • It’s still a stupid name, regardless of how much sense it makes

  • Funtime Happysnacks

This makes me want a Switch way more than any other game currently announced for it. HD-2D is what I’ve been dreaming of. I feared sprites might have been dead forever, so glad Bravely default is inspiring further turn-based original JRPGs.

  • Funtime Happysnacks

It’s a very meaty demo as well. A lot to do and discover for such a small slice.

  • Envy-Noson

Let’s be honest Square Enix can’t come up with a good title to save their lives, luckily for them gameplay, story, & world building is something we care about.

  • KiTA

It’s by the Bravely Default team.

Unless something goes horribly wrong, it’ll be up there with Persona 3/4/5 as far as quality goes.

The whole 8 paths thing makes me think of Romancing SaGa. This an the Alliance Alive, which is basically a new SaGa game (after Legend of Legacy). It’s a good time to be a fan of the “open world” branch of JRPGdom.

  • You SonySlaves really want Sony to continue their monopoly don’t you?
