Age of Empires II and III Definitive Editions Announced

Microsoft Studios has announced definitive editions for both Age of Empires II and Age of Empires III for Windows PC.

For those not following the high-definition remasters that are all the rage now, this means both games will get new releases with high-definition visuals, balancing tweaks, and a multitude of new features coupled with new content to boot. Considering the original game’s Definitive Edition is a Windows 10-only release, we’re assuming these two are the same.

Further details weren’t confirmed. The developer also confirmed the release date for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, which is set for this October, alongside some entirely new features coming to the venerated strategy game. Despite the fact that HD releases for all these games are currently available, these are essentially completely redone in HD, versus the old assets in HD.

In related news, Microsoft Studios also revealed Age of Empires IV, an entirely new sequel in the long-running strategy game franchise. You can read more about that here.

Doesn’t AoE2 already have a “definitive” edition released a few years ago?

I hope they’ll include all of the ten million AoEII expansions from the getgo.

I dunno what the hell this means for AoEIII either, since it doesn’t have nearly as much to fiddle with. Nice that they remember it, though, I guess. I think I like it more than most people.

    windows 10/store though

    >Windows 10-only release

    Lol, no. Get bent!

Microsoft is retarded if you they think these will finally get people to buy from the Windows store.

I don’t care how good a game is, I 100% will not buy it on Windows Store. UWP is the ultimate DRM cancer, and it needs to die before it can spread. I’m even avoiding Ori 2 if that doesn’t come to Steam or GOG (neither of which are confirmed yet).

Lol Windows 10 only? Great job releasing it on an OS that most PC gamers hate.

Listen…Microsoft…let me tell you something. If you are serious in trying to get back into the PC market, you need to release your shit on PC platforms that most PC gamers give a shit about i.e. Steam/GOG. I know you are trying to be cute; cheap asses in not wanting to pay Valve or CD Projeckt a cut but almost no one wants your fucking Windows App/Windows Store a.k.a. GFWL 2.0 bullshit.

Whatever price you had to pay to put it on other platforms you would make back in no fucking time. I mean, could you imagine if you put ANY of the Halo games with Steamworks modding?! And I mean, even Halo 1 and 2!!

  • Neojames82

Once they realize their mistake, hopefully they’ll put it on Steam at least.
