Castlevania Animated Series Producer Wants to Make a “Dark Metroid” Anime

This is Niche Culture. In this column, we regularly cover anime, geek culture, and things related to video games. Please leave feedback and let us know if there’s something you want us to cover!

Hot on the heels of the first Castlevania animated series launching on Netflix and being instantly renewed for a second season, producer Adi Shankar is setting his sights on even more franchises to adapt into animated form.

While the producer has already been tapped to produce an “anime” based on the Assassin’s Creed series, he’s apparently a big fan of Nintendo games as well. Shankar said he wants to make “Dark Metroid in the same anime style,” in a slight tease to Nintendo Life.

Unfortunately, that’s all we have to go on for now – however make sure to sound off in the comments below with what  you’d like to see in a Metroid animated series!

Yeah, good luck with that, dumb dumb.

*Quippy Joss Whedon tier one liner*

God damn fuck that Castlevania cartoon. And double fuck it for committing the sin of having shit music

  • Mr0303

One project at a time, please. Plus I doubt Nintendo will allow this anyway.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

Saddly, Nintendo bitches will never allow it

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Think it’s the only wholly Nintendo owned franchise that has people talking.

  • SuuLoliBoob

Kinda hard to do when the guy makes cartoons, not anime.

  • SuuLoliBoob

Triple fuck it for trying to pass itself off as an anime.

  • Tubsiwub

If this happens, I would definitely watch it.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

The lore behind Metroid is pretty shit tbh, and Other M made this very evident.

I liked it better when the series was more mysterious and open to interpretation, because Sakamoto is not a very good story teller, except for maybe Fusion.

  • Claire Rieveldt

Does everything need a dark and edgy adaption? Another M tried that and failed. :/

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)

So… is this one gonna be mute?
Cause the last time she spoke fans threw a fit.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I think that was accidentally dark and edgy. Pokemon should have one with the kinda Dex and history people made up for it.

  • Bitterbear

They’re gonna go Marvel Comics-style and kill Samus so they can replace her with a diversity gender-fluid, blacktinarab woman that looks like this:

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That looks more like the example for a Gargoyles reboot.

  • Skate or Die

After seeing the Castlevania series, I have complete faith in him that he would make an amazing adaptation of Metroid. Sadly, there’s no way in Hell Nintendo would ever greenlight that!

Then again, they are coming out with Prime 4 and an official Metroid 2 remake, I could see them greenlighting a promotional short anime film like what they did with Starfox Zero.

  • Alex Drake

That sound like a fucking amazing idea! Given what he did with Castlevania I would love to see it

  • Snorlaxation

The last time she spoke her character was thoroughly thrashed. That’s more Team ninja’s fault than anything else.

  • Loli de 42 Dias de Vida

you speak as if the Prime games or the Manga weren’t Edgy AF

  • Bitterbear

If anything, Aziz did the best Apple ad ever:

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Actually that was Sakamoto’s fault, he was the one who wrote the shitty backstory. Team Ninja originally had something closer to Prime in mind, which Sakamoto has dismissed as a “side story” before.

  • NukeA6

I dunno; it looks like it would be a good idea but I don’t want it to ruin the series even more by being some “u go grrl” Mary Sue show

  • Kessek

Hopefully they’ll have better writers this time around.

  • Travis Touchdown

How typical from someone working on Castlevania. “I want something that people actually care about.”

  • Snorlaxation

Well if that’s true, that’s worse. Either way, most of that hate for her (and the game) were justified (though the gameplay was fun).

  • OSad

Fans didn’t throw a fit because Samus “spoke”, Samus has had inner monologues and dialogue since Super Metroid and Fusion.

I can’t speak to any other fan, but I get upset because they ruined what Samus is in my mind: a badass, fearless, resourceful bounty hunter who takes charge and gets the job done, overwhelming odds, malfunctioning equipment or alien gods be damned. She is portrayed as the complete opposite in Other M, a walking adderal supplement who can’t even activate basic suit functions without daddy Adam saying it’s okay. Even Fusion, a game that suffers from a lot of the same problems Other M did, does this better by having Samus actually talk back to the A.I. when it traps her in a save room (not to mention Other M gives players a bit more agency by letting them sequence break in a certain part of the game, something Other M never does).

It’s okay, go ahead, do the dumb Metroid cartoon-anime. Just make sure you nail the source material. Make sure you don’t piss all over what your fans have come to know and love from your series’ main character (and if you have to change her, consider instead making a new character for that).

It’s hard, almost stupid, to expect anything good to come out of this though, it’s like hoping for a miracle like the Deadpool movie to happen, you cannot disassociate what the director wants the character to be from what the character has grown to be over more than a decade of titles.

  • Matz

I liked the Castlevania series, it was good, I don’t liked some stuff but it was a great adaptation and I think they could make a great adaptation of Metroid too… now if people were to stop using the word “Anime” for every Western Show that takes inspiration from Japanese Animation

  • Magnifico Ginormous

Like Castlevania? What’s the matter that series not cucky enough to Nintendo for your taste?

  • Espio419

    Anime are cartoons.

  • SuuLoliBoob

    but cartoons are not anime.

  • Would that be bad? I’d be up for this.

  • With the castlevania guy? Hahaah

  • Eden

Those type of female characters (the so-called “Badasses”) are a fucking nuisance anyway and bring my enjoyment level to 0. I would love to “badass” get killed off and replaced in the upcoming game.

All I can think of when someone tells me that a female character is badass is “She’s doing manly shit but it’s ‘cool’ because she has tits”. This whole “badass” female trend needs to die already because at this point, it’s thoroughly overused and no amount of suspending disbelief will help that shitshow of a character trait. It’s the same reason “Anthem” will be a shitty game, if portraying female characters as women makes them less “fun” then why have females in the game?

  • Eden

What? Metroid is a cult title and is only played by long time fans (I’m sure the fanbase will be growing soon), doesn’t really matter though because Metroid is shit storywise, and the protagonist is nothing but a cliche now. Samus is no different than Mikasa, Revy, Lara Croft, among other female video game/anime characters.

These female characters are nothing more than men with tits which only begs the question, why are these characters even female anyway? I would love to see a female character that’s manly, but I gets if you slap tits on it, men and feminist will flock to it like flies to shit…

  • Eden

Samus is already a “U go grrl” Mary Sue. Other then Chun Li, Feminist love to prop up Samus as a “badass” woman to pattern your life after.

  • Caio Pontes

People don’t know who Adi Shankar is. Go on youtube and watch his shorts. The man needs to be given anything he wants ASAP. Especially the Punisher one.

  • OSad

“All I can think of when someone tells me that a female character is
badass is “She’s doing manly shit but it’s ‘cool’ because she has tits”.”

Well, I guess this is pretty dependent on what you think a badass is. To me, Samus isn’t a badass because she’s got tons of personality, she stands up to authority or does tons of manly shit. From her very scant monologues, you can tell that this woman is purely business, reserved, antisocial even with a soft spot for alien lifeforms at times. She may as well be a total mute apart from those instances.

The thing is, we, the player, get to control Samus during her missions. When a player just barely scrapes by beating a giant monstrocity like Kraid or tosses Crocomire down a lava pit, there’s a certain sense of accomplishment that comes after. This can also vary from person to person obviously, but I as a player really get to feel like I’ve earned that moment. THAT’S when I think Samus becomes a badass, because she’s the player’s avatar in this universe. We beat the ugly alien together, not just Samus and not just the player.

“This whole “badass” female trend needs to die already because at this
point, it’s thoroughly overused and no amount of suspending disbelief
will help that shitshow of a character trait. It’s the same reason
“Anthem” will be a shitty game, if portraying female characters as women
makes them less “fun” then why have females in the game?”

Well, in the case of Metroid, Nintendo managed to put in a compelling character on a game waaay before any of the calls for diversity leads were commonplace in this industry. The thing is, they did it so well, because they didn’t shove it down the player’s throats: you got to know Samus’ gender at first and that was it, it was up to the player to build the character that I think Samus grew up to be today, through gameplay! Which is super cool in my opinion.

I urge you to not really hate on “badass” characters or, really, any character archetype at all. Any character can be compelling for the right or wrong reasons, what you should hate is the politics that are injected in games via these characters. And of course, always vote with your wallet.

No, they are two very different things.

  • Brimfyre

It’s funny when people bring up the “won’t use her weapons unless Adam authorizes it” as some kind of example of sexism, where it’s the people who interpret the scene that way who are truly sexist.

If Samus was a male, and hired by the Galactic Federation to do a job and said he couldn’t use his weapons unless authorized, no one would say a god damn thing.

Or if the roles were flipped and Adam was a woman and Samus a man, no one would say anything. It’s only because Samus is a woman and you see her as the inferior sex because she is taking orders from a male officer. The sexism lies with you and you alone.

I just finally started Nier Automatica and it starts with 2B and the rest of YorHa not using the full capabilities of their mechs until it is authorized by command. That example sticks out because it is the most recent, but it is a typical course of action in a military command type setting.

Samus was following protocol for a job she was HIRED to do.

Other M sucked because the story was bland as shit and the voice acting was horrid beyond belief and Adam and all the other marines were horrible boring characters. But pretending there is some underlying sexism theme is immature and ridiculous, and the only reasons someone would find one in there, again, is if they are in fact sexist themselves and see women as the inferior sex.

  • NukeA6

Feminists like to prop them as whatever their trashy minds think of but in the games, she’s not those Mary Sue types that keep popping up.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

If that and Federation Force were different IPs, then it would have worked better. The hate mostly stems from the fans who felt they were cheated out of getting another Prime or 2D game, not necessarily the quality of the games.

Imagine if after a decade of no Mario games, 2D or 3D, all we got was another Dr.Mario game instead.

Also, I’m willing to forgive Sakamoto since hes made it clear that he learned from Other M’s failure.

  • ProxyDoug

  • ProxyDoug

I’d ditch AC for this though.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Shut up, Eden; I’m talking about characters in the game speaking whereas everything else Nintendo owns having only grunts.

  • OSad

“I just finally started Nier Automata and it starts with 2B and the
rest of YorHa not using the full capabilities of their mechs until it is
    authorized by command.”

There’s no function being withheld from the Flight Units, they work as advertised from start to finish. YorHa units and 2B are new elements to the series without any character building done to them, plus they are under direct command from a military. No such thing is applicable to Samus, putting her in a very different position.

“Samus was following protocol for a job she was HIRED to do.”

Wrong, she picked up on a distress signal, and later willingly decided to stay in the Bottle Ship to help the Federation squad out. Adam only lets her do this if she follows orders and disables nearly every suit function Samus has, which Samus somehow agrees to. I can buy maybe disabling Power Bombs to not damage the station, but every other function like the Space Jump? Varia and Gravity Suits? The fucking Grapple Beam? Are you kidding me?

The Adam setup is bad, regardless of gender (feel free to switch the genders around if you want, it doesn’t make a damn difference), because it puts full authority in the hands of Adam, and Samus willingly agreeing to his every order. There is a separation from Samus being the player’s avatar, to Samus being someone you have to bodyguard as she patiently waits to be railroaded to the next objective by whoever is bossing her around.

If they had made another character, one that is much less experienced, and is part of the Federation, this would probably work fine. But because it’s Samus Aran, killer of Space Pirates, lava walker and fearless explorer, it does not work. It trivializes all past adventures this character has been on, takes agency away from the player and puts it squarely in the hands of the game, which is the complete opposite you want out of a Metroid game.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

    Metroid manga. Edgy. WHAAAAAAAAAAT?

  • Matthew Rieve Naïlo

I can just imagine Samus getting kicked in the testicles already XP

  • Loli de 42 Dias de Vida

if a Child watching an Alien Pterodactyl murder her parent in front of her eyes than later have the same alien Pterodactyl describes how he maimed and ate their corpses to survive isn’t Edgy, I don’t know what is.
