Nintendo Switch SDK Leak Suggests Planned Guest Login, Save Data Transfer Features

Prior to some indie developers even getting their hands on the Nintendo Switch software development kit, a new leak (via NeoGAF) of the software has given us hints as to what Nintendo is planning in new updates to the hybrid console.

The new leak suggests that Guest Account log ins are coming, alongside the ability to finally transfer save data between multiple consoles.

Here are the blurbs found in the SDK, via Nintendo:

In the future, we plan to provide a feature to transfer account save data among multiple consoles. As a result, there is the possibility that user accounts with uninitialized account save data will be added. Note that your design must work without issue, even in this case.

We are considering a feature in the future (tentative name: Guest Login) to access existing network service account information without linking to a user account. This feature would allow temporary access to the network service account linked to the Nintendo Account by logging in to the Nintendo Account within the application. This feature would, for example, make it possible to upload a character you have raised as online data and then use that data on a friend’s NX (without creating a user account).

As with any type of leak, we’re going to wait until an official announcement comes via Nintendo. For now – sound off in the comments below with what kind of features you’d like to see Nintendo add to the Switch operating system!

    about damn time

  • Alex Drake

    At least they’re actually listening.

  • artemisthemp

Looking forward to getting one for Xeonblade

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

The main reason I never modded my Wii was the fear of bricking it and losing all my stuff, all thanks to Nintendo’s hyper fear of piracy by not allowing transfers.

  • totenglocke

It sucks that, even if I buy a backup 3DS or used Wii U, I’d still lose my digital games if the original system died. Nintendo seriously needs to fix how they treat digital content.

  • Uncle Ocelot

    Good news.

  • Heresy Hammer

Well you can call support and have your account transferred to a new device (for 3ds in my experience) if you have the old device. But you shouldn’t have to do that in the first place.

  • totenglocke

If they still support that by the time the system dies.

  • The Clansman

I think buying digital games on consoles at all is a bad idea. Since most platforms aren’t even backwards compatible when the next console comes out you won’t be able to play your digital games on it, you either stick to your old hardware or lose them.

That’s why I only buy digital on PC.

  • totenglocke

I only buy a digital game on consoles if there is no physical copy or the physical copy is rare and obscenely expensive.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Yeah I half agree. On one hand I like the convenience of having digital stuff on consoles, but for example, it really pisses me off how my awesome collection of retro JRPGs on PS3 can’t be transferred over to the PS4.

  • InkViper

So a disgruntled developer drops the SDK! well, maybe this would be a good time for NCL to start paying close attention to NOA, especially in light of the complaints from those anonymous indie developers for a while back.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

It will probably be censored shit in the end if the same people who worked on the first game are working on it.

  • FreshSnug

It’s Nintendo. You don’t need the “probably” especially now that localizers work to censor the game before it’s ever released now.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

That’s interesting though. I’ve read that a lot of the major Nintendo made Switch like Breath of the Wild haven’t been censored.

  • artemisthemp

So no reason to get Switch I hear

  • OldPalpy

LMAO the second reply is a reminder that mods will ban anyone that dares mentions what the main use case for homebrew is. I imagine they do this not to protect the honor of homebrew but to stop the jounros and devs who obsess over that shithole from seeing what Neogaf’s userbase mainly uses homebrew for which would be triggering for sure.

  • totenglocke

That’s the NoA Treehouse SJWs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is being translated by NoE.

  • Donwel

NoE did the first one didn’t they? Or was that Fatal Frame on Wii U?

  • VersVlees

Stuff like being to able to move/backup save files should have been there from the start.

  • Shep

The one thing that has consistently kept me from wanting a Switch (besides the apparent lack of software) has been how basic and otherwise useless the operating system is. It’s been almost four months since launch, and we still have no media players or apps, no web browser, no applications at all beyond the few games. I mean yeah it’s great that they’re finally getting things like data transfer and guest login (at some point, at least), but why applaud them on that when their competition has already had it for the entire last generation and beyond?

I get that not every device needs to be a Netflix-enabled multimedia living room centerpiece, but the portability gimmick doesn’t much impress when you can’t even do something as simple as browsing the web with it. Even the 3DS and Wii U could do at least that, among other things.

  • Nalferd

    Bu…but… “It’s only a game console!”

  • InkViper

They did both games, as well as Pandora’s Tower, The Last Story and Disaster, day of crisis.

  • InkViper

It’s Eiji Aonuma dude,I don’t think he likes anyone touching his stuff!

  • Fear Me I Am Free

    Which is a good thing.

  • FreshSnug

Is this how you’re going to enjoy your switch? Fingers crossed that the next game won’t get censored? That said I still have my doubts. As long as “Nintendo” is anywhere near it, it’s not safe.

  • FreshSnug

What in the world would they censor in a Zelda game? I mean aside from the blood and shield they censored in the newer versions of Ocarina Of Time.
