Risk of Rain 2 Announced, Comes in Full 3D

Hopoo Games has announced the sequel to their acclaimed rogue-like Risk of Rain.

Fittingly named Risk of Rain 2, the sequel will be the first game Hopoo has developed to be in 3D. In a blog post, the team explained their decision, saying:

Risk of Rain 2 has been in development for about six months. Because of this, Hopoo Games currently has no details on release, platforms, or pricing. The original Risk of Rain released on PC in 2013 before releasing on PS4 and PS Vita in 2016.

    Now there’s a surprise.

  • BaconCatBug

Completely misses the point of why people liked Risk of Rain in the first place. A sad day indeed.

    What do you mean?

  • Personaknight

No one said a sequel had to build on the original though it is preferred. Well be interesting to see how they bring this game in 3d if it seems a bit limiting to the 2d gameplay elements. Wonder how they will do levels and secrets this time around.

RoR was all about bragging about your good eyesight for being able to distinguish the tiny sprites for ants.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

What are you talking about? People loved RoR for the gameplay. The art style was nice, but this game going 3D could be just as good.

  • InfectedAI

Did the first ever stop being real buggy? That quote from the dev about the new game not crashing makes me think no.

  • Grampy_Bone

    Well that was unexpected.

The devs are /v/irgins, aren’t they?

Yeah, they mostly fixed everything. There are weird things that happen when the screen fills with missiles, but you’re otherwise okay these days.

  • UnpluggedBeta

3d why? Why god why? People don’t play the pixel artistic games hoping that it makes the jump to 3d.

  • UnpluggedBeta

Could be; the gameplay will invariably change. People who liked the original won’t necessarily like the sequel since it looks so different so it sounds like the devs are taking a risk.

  • UnpluggedBeta

Yes! The OST is probably what made the game as enjoyable as it is.

On that note, I tried playing the game on a tv screen once; big mistake. That is something that absolutely needs your face at desktop pc monitor closeness.
