Game Freak Hiring for a “Worldwide Popular RPG” on Consoles

Game Freak is hiring for a new console RPG, and it seems as if it may have something to do with Pokemon.

In recently posted job listings, Game Freak is looking for 3D model designer to work on a “worldwide popular RPG.” Specifically, the developer is looking for someone able to work with Wii U/PS Vita level models, which would make sense for a Pokemon game.

A few months back, rumors of a Nintendo Switch version of Pokemon Sun and Moon titled Pokemon Stars began popping up. Is this related to the alleged Switch port? We should find out in the coming months.

  • wavemotioncannon

Every day these chucklefucks spend not making Drill Dozer 2 is a day they might as well spend huffing paint. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6a20e7f31b9e229d7a0e766ffde6ed4ccec6ecdf39a68d3db965672db62c9895.jpg

  • Izzy Lichi

time for someone to use a MST on you, cannon. you have been accumulating too many charges

  • wavemotioncannon

Im not quite sure I understand what you said, but I want to clarify anyway that I am, indeed, very salty :p haha

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

    Fuck that where’s Pulseman 2?

  • wavemotioncannon

Dont be dissin’ the dozer man!
Gamefreak’s pretty awesome when they are not chained in Miyamoto’s basement making animals beat the fuck out of each other, I just wish they got more freedom for their projects :(

  • Izzy Lichi

why is everyone here assuming its a pokemon game? maybe gamefreak gained control of another RPG IP and is hiring new people for it.

  • Izzy Lichi

oh i thought for sure you got my reference, because your name is wave Motion Cannon lol thats a yugioh card thats very powerful but extremely susceptable to being hit by MST (mystical Space Typhoon) which destroys any continuous magic card

  • wavemotioncannon

Well, I did get the name from the card but I havent played in decades. I just found the card randomly under my desk like two months ago haha

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

Yeah same. Pocket Card Jockey is my jam

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I want that too; maybe then Pokemon would actually be good for once.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    “Worldwide Popular RPG”
Namco just released a Tales of Game so they likely wouldn’t be selling it anytime soon.
Square’s in too deep to sell FF while Enix has nothing to gain from selling DQ.
I don’t think Bethesda games fall under RPG anymore
Maybe Battle Network; it’s still a bad choice for an RPG dev but better than Capcom.
Could be a new Earthbound if that rumor of Earthbound 3 getting released on the EShop in the west ends up true.
What RPGs of that popularity or speaking out your ass popularity am I forgetting?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

They can’t even make a single player game; an MMO by Gamefreak would be a barren wasteland and P2W out the ass while it’s subscription based.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Not even slightly surprising, the Switch is the 3DS successor, it will inevitably get Pokemon games.

  • Uncle Ocelot

Because what else would it be?

  • Izzy Lichi

    lmao calm down ^
did a black dude steal your girl

  • Izzy Lichi

its an OP as fuck card, and was banned like ages ago haha

  • Audie Bakerson

    Finally! Mario and Wario II!

  • Yeah the switch is replacing both the 3ds and Wii U.

  • Jimmy Roche

Successor implies that the new system builds off of the success of the previous member, leading me to believe that the Wii u won’t have a successor, it’ll die alone with it’s last worthy title

  • AuraMaster DX (austin9568)

Well when you hear “gamefreak” and “rpg” together. What do you people are gonna think?

  • Zombie_Barioth

I don’t think its a lack of freedom, Game Freak after all are a private company, not one of Nintendo’s subsidiaries.

They’re a bit smaller than Atlus, so they don’t have the man-power to balance too many projects at once. They don’t have the resources to do everything they want.

I think a lot of what we’ve seen with Sun&Moon is them trying to stretch their creative muscle, within a familiar canvas.

  • Tyrannikos

I don’t ever remember Wave Motion Cannon being banned. Maybe it happened while I was out of the game for a bit, but it’s Unlimited right now.

  • wavemotioncannon

Well, like the voodoo guy from the princess and the frog said: “Freedom takes green”.
If they had some more resources they could focus on other non pokemon things. I dont dislike all pokemon though, but I like the spinoffs a lot more.
I wish they werent the pokemon guys all the time. Things like wrecker and tembo are good, but I bet these guys have so many cool ideas in the inkwell.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

When did making lists mean anything other than calm?

  • Zombie_Barioth

Exactly, although its hard to say whether they can’t or simply don’t want to expand too much.

They do hire people when needed, but its possible they’re also trying to maintain that small-studio vibe as much as they can.

Its interesting though how much Pokemon seems to suck up their time, seeing as they don’t make the spinoffs.

  • Sigma

What he said Game Freak and Intii Creates present…

    PULSEMAN: A shocking a adventure

  • Izzy Lichi

oh look now you’re getting passive aggressive, your temperament knows no controls Lol count to 10

  • Izzy Lichi

i guess they decided to unbann it and allow one because its very susceptable in the current meta, plus burn decks stuck ass

  • Kain Yusanagi

Considering just how much dosh they’ve gotten from Pokemon, they could stand to make something else, and ease up on the pokemon glut they’ve been pounding out. :/

  • wavemotioncannon
  • Sigma

    hmm rob plus Onahole= Profit

  • Zombie_Barioth

Considering their output though, that money might not go as far as you’d think.

I mean they’ve been putting them out pretty consistently from the start, that money is obviously what pays their bills in-between releases.

Pokemon is pretty much their SMT/Persona, and really, Atlus is in the same boat.

  • Kain Yusanagi

Going by the release years… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ca7228d65b7bd5a28f524422a13c01d9085cf591fab762ac640150728ffa5d97.png

…I’d say that that doesn’t quite hold up. They only have 108 employees as of april last year, but even if they’ve had them since the beginning of Pokemon, even with a 1/4th cut (nintendo 1/2, creatures 1/4) they’d have gotten $6,250,000,000 USD by 2005, far more than enough to pay everyone’s wages and then plenty left over. Obviously their staff makes more than the average of ~60K/year salary, but even still. Bloomberg reports that the CEO salary is only 276.7K, so it’s not like it’s all being funnelled into their pockets, either. Even with a 10% return, it’d still be $2,500,000,000 USD. Considering that Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak own the copyright equally, it being a lesser share than that is not likely. Yes, I know I’ve not accounted for secondary costs like translation, but that’s not a cost they bear solo, either.

TL,DR; they definitely make more than enough to do so.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever
  • Zombie_Barioth

What are you basing those numbers off of? The games sell for only $40 at most, and that’s not pure profit. A good $10-$20 is going to be the retailers’s cut.

There’s also The Pokemon Co. to consider, being a co-founder a good chunk of their funds probably go to funding the company.

But at any rate, there’s definitely more than money going on here.

  • wavemotioncannon

Methinks they are probably stuck in some shitty contractual situation at some degree. That and good old risk aversion, which seems fair because their games never do exceptionally well in the market, but then again, thats probably because every game they make its gonna get compared to goddamn Pocket Monsters.
Its harder to live down a success than a failure.

  • Zombie_Barioth

That’s probably part of it, yeah. It could be something that was written up way back when they started, when they thought the series was going to end with gen II.

I don’t think being compared to Pokemon is the thing that keeps their other projects from succeeding though. They tend to be pretty low-profile, not much if any advertising. It also doesn’t help that some games never even made it out of Japan.

I think it may also be a situation similar to Smash Bros. or MGS, where they do enjoy doing it, but also sorta feel obligated to keep going.

  • wavemotioncannon

Yeah, I guess thats possible. I hope someday they will become something more than the pokemon guys, but still, they cool.

  • Izzy Lichi

good you needed to calm down, glad u posted a gif of your mom consoling you.

  • Kain Yusanagi

Off of the official release information for profits claimed by the Pokemon Company, which is jointly owned by Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak. Like I said, I didn’t address secondary costs, including through retail pricings, because they were not costs borne solely by them, and as such cannot be easily subdivided without internal financial knowledge; even the estimate I gave for their return is only that, an estimate. Even then, PKMN Ltd. only had 400 employees in 2016, so even if Game Freak had to pay all of their wages, they’d still have a neat sum in profit available over the years to invest elsewhere, not just back into Pokemon.

My point isn’t that they shouldn’t do Pokemon anymore, but that there’s room for more than just Pokemon, including financially, that they don’t seem to be moving on.
