Pokemon the Movie 20: I Choose You! Returns to Roots, First Trailer

The Pokemon Company and Nintendo are readying a new Pokemon movie that returns to the very beginning of the entire series, in celebration of the series’ 20th anniversary.

Dubbed appropriately Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You!, the new movie sees the beginning of Ash Ketchum’s journey through the Kanto region.

Poised as a retelling of the entire series, the movie is focused on the beginnings of the anime series, where Ash and Pikachu first struggle to become partners.

Here’s a look at the movie’s Japanese poster:

Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You! will kick off in Japan on July 15th. A western release isn’t confirmed yet – but we’re sure to hear something before this summer.

thats not how the Ho-Oh thing went

  • I know it’s totally different, was thinking the same thing

  • Captain Vidya

Oh shit, Ho-Oh’s in a movie!

  • SuperDuperSenpai

It’s a retelling. I’m more annoyed about the marking on his hat being different, personally.

  • Deus Solaris

one of the most epic moments of my childhood remade with good animation…nice

  • Mr0303

After suffering through 14 seasons of the anime I can’t bear to look at Ash’s mug any more.

And the best part is that it won’t have a janky animation in an effort to keep kids from developing photosensitive epilepsy.

    Getto da ze!

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

    Someones childhood was average.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

So I wasn’t remembering it wrong! It annoys me too.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

That’s nothing, his years of stupidity makes me wanna slug him every time he does soemthing now.

  • scemar

I liked how it looked in the anime more, it was hard to tell how it looked because it was so shiny and didn’t show its real colors

  • Deus Solaris

“I need to bash on people on the internet to validate my existence” That’s all I heard, buddy ;)
But yeah I agree this wasn’t nearly one of the most epic moments one can see as a kid, I guess the nostalgia took hold of me when I typed that comment ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Gigaknight

I didn’t get anywhere near that far. I was done after the Orange Islands.

I should have been done after “Aim for the horn!” but I was still attached to the anime. (That, and Charizard vs. Magmar was pretty good.)

At this point he is probably one of the worst trainers spanning all known regions. Only slightly above Team Rocket.

  • Zero Eternity

Ash got the Rainbow Feather early. Knowing him he’s gonna drop that a minute afterwards.

  • Fenrir007

Was he confirmed to be Giovanni’s son at some point in the show?

  • Fenrir007

Oh, a retelling? Didn’t really watch the other Pokeyman movies besides the first 2, but I might just watch this one out of nostalgia.

  • Zombie_Barioth

No, that’s Silver, who never actually had an appearance in the main anime.

Anyway, I wouldn’t say he’s one of the worst trainers, considering his accomplishments he’s probably one of the best. Unfortunately like many good characters he falls victim to the writer’s whims, and to one that doesn’t care about him ‘growing up’ at that.

The anime isn’t really aimed at older audiences, if anything its more the kind of show that’s just enjoyable enough for older viewers.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

At least Team Rocket can fall back on their great skill in selling or robotics.
