Nioh Preview – Yokai Ball Buster

Niche Gamer Plays is an ongoing video preview series where our staff take an in-depth and yet concise look at classic, current, and upcoming games across all current gaming platforms.

I take you though an hour of one of my most anticipated games of 2017, Nioh.

This no nonsense yokai slaying game is very Dark/Demon Souls in nature, but has the chops to bring interesting stories to the for front in a clean and defined structure.

Nioh is launching for PlayStation 4 on February 7th in North America, February 8th in Europe, and February 9th in Japan. Expect our review for the game forthcoming.

I was looking forward to this game…until I played the demo. Good God, those controls are awful. Also, why make everything have a “haze” filter applied to it so you can’t see shit?

  • NuclearKangaroo

    DELETE THIS RIGHT FUCKING NOW!

oh well, never been a fan of the souls-style games to be honest

  • Chocolate ISISCream

    >game will never be on my platform of choice (PC), therefore I will claim I have never been a fan

    pathetic

  • Arenegeth

The “haze” effect is only for that stage (maybe more in the final game) is actually part of the story, its a miasma that clears up when you beat the boss. Though I know making the game look like it came out on the N64, is not exactly wise for a demo.

The controls are fine for what type of game it is, assuming you like the Dark Souls type games which is why you were looking forward to this? The mechanics have issues, but the controls seem on par with the DS games to me.

  • totenglocke

The only souls game I’ve played so far is Bloodborne and the controls on this are different enough to be obnoxious, plus the ki pulse mechanic is just annoying. When you’re in the middle of a fight, you don’t have time to notice the brief flash of blue and then remember to hit a button that you don’t use in combat.

As for the haze on that stage? Yes, it was really dumb to put it in the demo because it’s one of the factors (though not the main one) that caused me to delete the demo and no longer want to purchase the game.

  • totenglocke

2009 is being generous. I haven’t seen graphics that blurry since the ’90s.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

    >and the controls on this are different enough to be obnoxious

Whoa man. It’s almost as if it’s a different game.

    > plus the ki pulse mechanic is just annoying. When you’re in the middle of a fight, you don’t have time to notice the brief flash of blue and then remember to hit a button that you don’t use in combat.

    >You don’t use R1 in combat

And that’s why you fucking suck , did you even TRY changing your stance?

    >As for the haze on that stage? Yes, it was really dumb to put it in the demo because it’s one of the factors (though not the main one) that caused me to delete the demo

And yet you just loved it in Bloodborne, didn’t you?

  • totenglocke

Bloodborne is dark, this pile of shit is blurry. There’s a HUGE fucking difference. And yes, I did change my stance, but when you’re being attacked, you don’t have time for multi-button combos. I can play the game just fine, it’s just not enjoyable due to the poor controls and 20 year old graphics that make me feel like I have glaucoma.

  • NuclearKangaroo

nigga not everyone likes dark souls you know?

but hell keep convincing yourself im jealous of your piece of plastic, whatever helps you sleep at night

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

    >And yes, I did change my stance, but when you’re being attacked, you don’t have time for multi-button combos

Well gee, I beat the main mission, the Twilight Mission, and the Muneshige side boss just fine using “Multi button combos.” It’s called stamina management which if you played Bloodborne you should already be good at but apparently you’re not.

    > I can play the game just fine, it’s just not enjoyable due to the poor controls

It’s Dark Souls except faster and multiple stance with stringing combos.

    >20 year old graphics that make me feel like I have glaucoma.

MUH GRAFICKS ISN’T WITCHER 3 SO THE GAYME IS BAD WAAAAAH

    >However, if you want to make a game in a genre dominated by one company, you can’t mess up the controls.

Except they didn’t you raging autist. You are the only person I’ve seen that claimed bad controls. You run, you slash, you fucking block, dodge, and ki pulse. What in the shit is wrong with any of those?

    > Imagine if a new FPS came out where you were forced to use the right stick to move and left stick to look

A new FPS DID come out with new controls compared to its contemporaries with brand new controls. Gee, what was it called again? Oh yeah. Halo. Who the shit bitched about those controls?

And on the topic of swapping stivks, I played with swap sticks perfectly fine in Modern Warfare 2 and I know my friend did too because he set it as his default because he’s a lefty and I had no problem adapting to it because I’m not a shitslinging retard.

    >used face buttons for weapons instead of the shoulder buttons, etc

    Ratchet and Clank says “Hi”

    > people would be beyond annoyed that they refused to follow the control setup established by the dominate games in the genre.

People didn’t complain about Halo, Demon’s Souls, or Devil May Cry. Except apparently you, you crybaby retard.

    > That’s why anyone who is experienced with FPS games can just pick up and go with a new FPS game

What, because they’re willing to actually play a game?

    >because they all have (essentially) identical control schemes to make them accessible

Oooh, I see. You just hate change and the second it happens you just shit in your drawers and fling it at a wall.

    > Anyone familiar with a souls game is going to be pissed when they get the shit kicked out of them due to the controls.

I wasn’t, and neither was anyone who played the demo except you. This is not a Souls game.

  • totenglocke

You realize that stamina regenerates just fine in Bloodborne without doing stupid ki pulse presses, right? I get that they were trying to mimic the health restore system from Bloodborne, but they forgot that all you have to do in Bloodborne is attack – not hit a completely unrelated button.

I’m not reading the rest of your fanboy cry-fest, but plenty of people on gaming forums are complaining about the controls and blurry graphics. If you want to buy it, go for it. But don’t lie to try and trick people who missed the demo into thinking that this is half as good as a souls game.

  • Shiggy Diggy Doo

    >You realize that stamina regenerates just fine in Bloodborne without doing stupid ki pulse presses, right?

Oh god forbid you look at your stamina bar, that’d require MULTITASKING. Can’t ever have that in an action game!

    >not hit a completely unrelated button.

    >Stance/weapon swapping is not related

Are you so retarded that you don’t change your weapons and stances for the situation? I bet you’re just assblasted that you used a high stance axe against a hoard.

    >I’m not reading the rest of your fanboy cry-fest,

“I’M NOT READING IT BECAUSE HAHAHA”

    Cry more, guy.

Played the demo. Was killed about 8 times, probably six of them by stepping into the stupid river in the starting area. Controls seem weird. Uninstalled.

  • what is this -_-

When did comments get so salty on niche, fuck.

    chill mang

  • malbhet

Actually I suspect this will release on the PC after a year or two, I mean it’s made by the same devs that created Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, Toukiden Kiwami and Toukiden 2, and they’ve been happily releasing their games on pc a year after the console versions.

  • malbhet

damn, you really went that far lmfao:D
