The Wii U Finally Outsells the Sega Dreamcast

Nintendo shared their second quarter earnings for 2015, and within the report was an interesting tidbit – globally, the Wii U has sold over 10.73 million units.

Normally, we’d simply report on this as is and say the console “has sold X number of units,” however, the Wii U has finally managed to surpass the Sega Dreamcast in global units sold.

In comparison, the Sega Dreamcast sold 10.6 million units by the time it was discontinued on March 31st of 2001. So while it took the Wii U roughly three years to overtake the Dreamcast, Sega’s last home console sold the same amount in half the time (around 18 months).

Microsoft’s Xbox One has sold roughly 14 million units globally, while Sony’s PlayStation 4 is currently reigning supreme this console generation with somewhere around 26 million units globally. (Editor’s note: we’re going off rough numbers, as the manufacturers like to only use shipped numbers).

As for Nintendo, the Kyoto-based company recently announced their first original smartphone app, Miitomo, the first in their aggressive entrance to the mobile space. Their long-rumored NX platform is expected to be revealed sooner rather than later – perhaps when that happens, they’ll move on from the Wii U.

Do you own a Wii U? If you, are you happy with your purchase thus far?
