Eating dinners in front of the Dreamcast, getting into drama-filled fights with “friends” who stole my rare, avoiding codebreaker users who could black-screen your game and corrupt your saves…for a lot of us, the original Phantasy Star Online was more than a game, it was a life-changer. It was a console MMO back when the idea of even a PC MMO was a relatively new concept. Free of charge and incredibly addictive, it caught hold of gamer’s attention and never seemed to let go. For those who were around back then, it holds a lot of nostalgia.
This is why a fan going by the name “Glader” has made a remastered version of that original classic, and just a few days ago, posted a playable demo of it on Reddit.
Though the demo lacks many of the game’s core features, it isn’t meant to be a complete release. Rather, it is proof that Glader is making progress and that such a project is possible. Ultimately, Glader’s goal is to make the game playable online. This will create a much more malleable and user-friendly version of the game that will be easier to modify than the notoriously sloppy work-arounds that PSO: Blue Burst requires.
You can follow progress of the project (as well as submit suggestions) via the PSO World forums or its Mod Database page.
