So file this as a rumor for now, but Spanish website LevelUp (via Reddit, thanks for the tip, Park!) has reported that Square Enix is “experimenting” with Sony’s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

The news comes via a press event for the release of Final Fantasy XIV’s Heavensward expansion in Mexico City, where director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that his team has been toying with the virtual reality headset and their MMORPG, and that they were even able to play the game with Morpheus feedback.

Yoshida did make a note in saying that in order for the game to be playable with Project Morpheus strapped to your face, they had to downgrade the graphics in-game to make up for the headset, but he did say it’s a very unique experience that Square Enix should let the players experience it for themselves.

Finally, he said that even with their breakthrough in making the game playable with Project Morpheus, it is an experimental piece of technology, despite the schedule to release the device publicly next year.

We’ll update this report as more information comes out – but what do you guys think? Is this wonderful news? Would you play an MMORPG with virtual reality? Are you ready to just live in the database? I’m sorry, I’ll see my way out.
