UPDATE: Xbox Wireless Headset Causes VR Prompt on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Blames “Localization Bug”

Xbox Series X VR wireless headset

The Xbox Wireless Headset has reportedly caused a prompt for VR headsets on Xbox Series X|S, all but confirming VR for the system.

IGN Italy journalist Giovanni Marrelli reports (translation: DeepL) that after the latest update for Xbox Series X|S systems, a message prompt for a VR headset popped up when installing a new Xbox Wireless Headset. “VR viewer needs to be updated. An update for the VR viewer is available.”

While it is curious why the wireless headset would trigger the message about VR (and only in Italy it seems), this no doubt means Microsoft are working on VR technology for Xbox Series X|S. Marrelli did not specify if the was utilizing an Xbox Series X or S, but it would seem more likely VR would be exclusive to the more powerful X than the consumer-budgeted S.

We previously reported how code in Microsoft Flight Simulator referenced “Scarlett_VR” alongside PC_VR. Project Scarlett was the name used for Microsoft’s next gen consoles before they were revealed; however the Xbox Series X and S were codenamed Anaconda and Lockhart in other files, respectively.

The previously announced Project Scorpio was previously planned to include VR support along with 4K, before being scrapped for Project Scarlet and what would become the Xbox Series X|S.

This would also mean Microsoft finally enters the VR market, while PC and PlayStation have dominated it for a while, and Nintendo produced Nintendo Labo.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.

UPDATE: Kotaku Editor Stephen Totilo has tweeted that the Xbox PR has denied the report as the result of an error. “The copy in this error message is inaccurate due to a localization bug. VR for console is not a focus for us at this time.”
