Xbox Game Pass for PC to Allow Users to Install Games Anywhere on their PC

Microsoft are testing installing games from Xbox Game Pass for PC into any folder on a PC, opening up more chances for modding.

The news was initially reported by The Verge, according to “sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans” that testing was being conducted on either Xbox Game Pass for PC or the Microsoft Store. They also note the freedom to install a game anywhere on a PC would open up more opportunities for modding; as well as freely backup and move games as needed (as with Steam) should you need to reinstall Windows.

“With great PC games like Back 4 Blood, Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Halo Infinite on day one with Game Pass, we wanted to provide players with more options to customize their experience in the Xbox app,” said partner director of experiences at Xbox Jason Beaumont when asked for comment by The Verge. “We’ll continue to share updates as we launch additional features.”

That additional info was shared today, possibly prompted by The Verge’s report. The new video details the changes coming to Xbox App for PC, and Xbox Game Pass for PC.

Xbox Insiders will soon be able to test being able to install to whatever drive they wish, faster download speeds, and edit local files. In the case of the latter, the Xbox App will also show which games are modable.

The Insiders will also get to experience Cloud Gaming via the Xbox Game Pass for PC. Earlier in August of this year, Microsoft stated cloud gaming was coming to Xbox consoles Holiday 2021.

Future plans for Xbox Game Pass include performance enhancements, making it easier for developers to implement features such as cross-saves and achievements, making plugins for common game engines such as Unreal, and more.

In addition, those who have adopted Windows 11 and don’t like the auto-HDR feature (adding HDR to games without it) can disable it via the Game Bar. They can even adjust the intensity of auto-HDR.
