Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

Today’s Waifu is Sofia de Sainte-Coquille from Rune Factory 3!

Sofia is an eccentric member of the Sainte-Coquille family who are wealthy aristocrats known across the Kingdom of Norad where much of the Rune Factory franchise takes place. Most games have at least one member of the family who’s short and rotund as a sort of quasi-mascot for the franchise. Pictured below is Sofia’s father Sherman de Sainte-Coquille.

Sofia is particularly strange even within the infamously eccentric family. She has problems expressing herself honestly, which has manifested as a habit to say the opposite of what she means. This has led to some famous quotes such as:

• “Your face utterly repulses me.”
• “I’ve burned everything that reminds me of you in a ritualistic bonfire!”
• “I want to drag you out to the wilderness and let the monsters have their way with you! Repeatedly!”

Unfortunately, Rune Factory 3 isn’t a fully voiced game because these would be pretty funny to hear. However, there is some voice acting, largely just some reaction noises and a few words here and there. Sofia herself is voiced by none other than Chihara Minori, who you may know as the voice of Yuki Nagato in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Overall, Sofia provides a tsundere experience without actually having that sort of abrasive personality (no shame if you’re into tsunderes). She’s an elegant lady with a quirk that leaves her a little self-conscious, but that makes her even more adorable.
