VanillaWare is “Exploring a Solution” to Bring Their Games to PC

dragon's crown 10-23-15-1

Sometimes even we miss things – however, we’ve learned (thanks, Fangbreaker!) something exciting regarding Japanese developer VanillaWare.

When responding to a fan on Facebook, VanillaWare president George Kamitani said the company is considering to bring their games to PC, via Steam.

“[We are] currently exploring a solution for a pc version,” said Kamitani when responding to a fan asking if VanillaWare could port their games to Steam (Editor’s Note: We’ve omitted the direct link as this is Kamitani’s personal Facebook page).

Would you guys support VanillaWare releases on PC? Sound off in the comments below!

I find it somewhat funny that when a console gets a late port it’s like “Oh? What’s the point? I already played this on this or that system” but when a late port [a very late one at that] appears for PC people are like “Awesome! Day 1!”~.

Would I support them? No. I already played all Vanillaware games on the PSV when they came out. I’ve no need to replay them on PC; especially with the upcoming batch of games to keep me occupied~.

Probably a dying Japanese console market is forcing japanese devs to look at the west for making easy money. Porting is far cheaper than creating a game, and the increasing PC player base in the west likely doesn’t own a console. And since it’s a digital release for steam, they also save money from needing to make physical copies.

Not to mention that all consoles eventually become dead platforms. How much money do you think Sega was/is making off the PS3 version of Valkyria Chronicles after its initial launch? On the PC on the other hand, it had very strong launch sales, has consistently sold well since and will probably do so for many years to come.

It entirely depends on the game and circumstances. By and large, a PC port always offers some sort of improvement over the original, which is why people were/are excited for ports like GTA V and Dragon’s Dogma. And as the recent Uncharted collection shows, this holds true even on consoles (that re-release got a lot of excitement). What’s the point of playing something like Chivalry: Medieval Warfare on consoles though, when a better version had existed for 2+ years prior. I will admit though that the improvements to VanillaWare’s games will probably be minimal at best, but I also like not having to dig out old systems out of the bottom of my closet to play older games, so I’ll always welcome PC ports.

I wouldn’t call GTA V a late port, just a company who failed to deliver in time. But definitely not a late port. Same with Dragon’s Dogma. But I see people on this post asking for ports of Muramasa Rebirth as well as Dragon’s Crown. Tell me, what can you possibly add to a two years old game to make them the “definitive version”? 1080p? Big deal, nobody cares. The DLC content? It was marginal~.

Considering the PSV is still very much alive, there are always better options than praying to God for ports of games of a system you refuse to buy even though you wish you could play half of its library on [insert your platform of choice here]~.

  35. DrearierSpider
    October 23, 2015 at 12:34 pm

The selective reasoning is real. GTA V was a purposefully staggered release meant to encourage repeat sales (R* admitted they had been working on GTA V PC from the beginning of development), not a company failing to meet deadlines, and Dragon’s Dogma was never originally intended to come to PC. Those are late ports, by the most basic of definitions. The PSV is alive?? Sony announced they themselves aren’t even supporting the damn thing.

As for 1080p, you not caring about it doesn’t mean others don’t. Judging by the comments on this thread, plenty of people would jump at the chance to play the game at higher resolutions and/or with other improvements. Finally, I’d hardly calling “praying to God” for these ports when the president himself said they’re looking into it.

I’m not trying to tell you whether or not you should go out and buy them if they were to happen, but you seem rather irritated by the idea of this happening when you could just ignore them with no consequences.

The PSV is quite alive. Sure, it’s not getting any games from Sony and that’s nothing new; Yoshida said the same last year prior to E3. Have you checked the amount of support it’s getting from third parties? Hell, this game you all want ported to PC in the first place is a third party game on PSV / PS3. All upcoming Vanillaware games are going to be on PSV much much sooner than they’ll ever be on PC. Is that a dead system to you~?

All this was started simply because I pointed the double standard. A console gets a late port [it could be a PC game] and people / reviews criticize it for being a late port. The PC gets the scraps from consoles ported reaaaaal late and it’s all cool? Some interesting, selective logic there~.

What’s a late port? A game that was ported, meaning the production itself, a year+ after the original game came out~.

    Better late than ever!

  39. DrearierSpider
    October 23, 2015 at 1:08 pm

I’ll admit the rise of indie games seems to be helping the Vita, and it’s always had a fairly large lineup of niche Japanese games, but it’s hard to deny that it flopped as far as hardware sales go, with only 12 million sold worldwide since launch.

My initial point remains though, it’s not selective reasoning but rather people wanting ports with a good set of improvements. Again, things like Uncharted, Metro Redux and other remasters that are done well prove this is the case on PC’s and consoles. I’ve also been seeing a good bit of excitement over the console versions of Wasteland 2 and Divinity: Original Sin from fans of that genre lately.

I think that’s a fair way to define late port, but there is no cut and dry definition of the term, so it could be interpreted as simply a game that gets ported to another platform later down the line.

  52. CommanderZx2

Stable high frame rate would be my main reason for picking up PC ports of older console games. Dragons’ Dogma ran like garbage, especially with large spells.

Dragon’s Crown had frame rate issues on PS3 in large action scenes. These sort of issues can be mitigated via a powerful PC running a decent port.

???? You’re time is up, my time is now. You can’t see me, my time is now! ????

With that out of the way…. First off: Dragon’s Dogma was never confirmed to be ported, so yeah, it’s a late port.

Secondly, people ask for said ports in this thread, because it’s literally about Vanillaware games being ported to PC. So duh, ports are the reason, they don’t have to add anything to it.

But besides that, yeah, technology advances, people get better TVs and monitors, and that’s why higher definition is something people care about. Plus, all the DLC packed neatly together at a decent price.

Your insecurity about losing the couple of exclusives that actually made people buy a PS4 is showing, but stress no further, this claim is false anyway. There’s no post like that on George’s Facebook.

I do like PC games, and getting these Japanese releases on PC and I would love to buy them, but more often than not I already have paid for the console version and have it on my hefty games shelf – the reason I own the consoles in the first place is to get these games that are not on other platforms and to minimize artifacts etc. emulation still has with 3D platforms.

The thing is this sets a precedent to have simultaneous releases of their future titles on the PC plataform. As for buying older titles on a PC, usually you enjoy things such as improved framerates and better resolution, draw distance etc, though much of this wouldn’t really apply to Vanillaware games. Still, it’s a way of supporting the studio, and I would gladly double dip for one of my favorite softhouses.

Never forget many of their titles have been available to play through emulation on the PC, so its not like PC-only gamers missed completely on them.

At least PC platform isn’t the one holding games hostage with unjustified exclusivity.

Physical media is dying even without PC gaming, due to proliferation of streaming services…etc.

Muramasa was out on the Wii, though with no DLC and a different translation. So that one is a multipl;ataform title.

Indeed. PC sales work different than consoles. Consoles peak at the 3 month period after launch and then plummet forever. PC may not sell as much initially, but remains a strong potential seller for years. Since almost everyone on a PC acquires games digitally, this also means no lost money on stocking, transporting etc physical discs as well.

  111. Fenrir007
    October 24, 2015 at 12:13 pm

And the PC should be the lead plataform. As god intended.

The original localization was gibberish, the graphics, while good, aren’t anywhere near the caliber of the graphics of Rebirth, the controls weren’t customizable and there was no DLC whatsoever. That said, point remains: Random implied that they [Muramasa Rebirth and Dragon’s Crown] were PS4 games which is outright dumb, if not ignorant~.

  115. Fenrir007
    October 24, 2015 at 5:49 pm

Regardless of the issues, its still a multiplat title. The localization, by the way, is not a consensus, as many believe the original one to be better. I actually prefer the Vita one, though I do think they went a bit too deep in the flowery prose to my tastes. A middle ground would be better, in my opinion.

And a sort of off topic side note. There is a version of the Wii game that was rebuilt by some guy after passing it through some filters, and some other guy redid Momohime’s sprite. Here is a comparison:

If it’s not the exact same game in terms of content [and the extra content isn’t something marginal that actually affects the experience] / technical aspects, then it’s not a multiplatform title. It’s a remake. Remake != multiplatform title. Don’t count it a full exclusive if you must, but it’s not the same game and therefore not a multiplatform, somebody with a Wii / Wii U will not get the same experience out of Muramasa than they’d from Muramasa: Rebirth. Examples:
    Persona 4: Golden = remake~.
    Atelier Rorona / Totori / Meruru / Ayesha + = multiplatform~.
    Dragon’s Crown = multiplatform~.
Injustice: Gods Among Us / Ultimate Edition = multiplatform~.
    The upcoming Gravity Rush PS4 = multiplatform~.

And Muramasa: Rebirth = remake. It’s not a multiplatform title unless the exact same version gets a port to PC or any other system~.

  117. Fenrir007
    October 24, 2015 at 7:59 pm

A retranslation is hardly a remake. The DLC is separate from the game. So I’d say it is a multiplataform title, indeed. Hell, some games sport different translations between their Europe and American releases. An example would be Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin.

A retranslation that actually makes sense versus the original, HD graphics versus decent ones in the original, DLC content you cannot play in any way on the original, the possibility to change the control layout that you cannot change on the original. That’s a remake, not a multiplatform title. Persona: Revelations (PSP) is not a multiplatform title, the Persona on the PSX is garbage due to shitty translation [though, admittedly, that one was truly awful. Muramasa on the Wii was just ok]. But I guess under your very, very, very limited vision; the upcoming Odin Sphere, making aside the fact that it’ll be on all Sony platforms, is a multiplatform title because it was released years ago on the PS2 and not a remake despite the new things included and revamped graphics~.

  120. Fenrir007
    October 25, 2015 at 12:33 pm

The “HD Graphics” you mention weren’t reworked – or do you think the art assets were entirely redone for a Vita game…? It’s a filter, that’s all. The retranslation making sense is something you personally believe – not what everyone else believes, as you can look around. A lot of people prefer the simple and more direct prose of the first one. DLC is a separate thing as I said before.

Odin Sphere will have at least expanded worlds, more monsters, will be fully voiced and will have fine tuned combat mechanics, whatever that means. It is significantly different from the original game, so yes, in that case, I’d say it warrants the title of a remake. Muramasa, on the other hand, is the same game on the Vita and the Wii, except you have the possibility of acquiring DLC on the Vita. The core game is the same.

I love how everyone is going ape spit over PR talk. Remember how Platinum said that “they think PC is cool”? Or how Halo 5 had “plenty of chance to show up on PC”? Or how John Cena was goaded into saying he was a PC gamer, despite WWE 2K16 NOT coming to PC? Or how Microsoft kept saying they will support PC as a game platform, while keeping many first party games exclusive on the Xbox? Or how Square said that they “might consider” bringing FF15 to PC? Have you noticed a pattern? All of this talk giving them the impression that they care about PC?

Kamitani is only saying this to shut PC gamers up, and give them something else to talk about. This holds no water at all. PlayStation is where the money is for Japanese developers, there is no other choice. You are delusional in thinking a JAPANESE developer, who almost exclusively makes PLAYSTATION games, will make games anything but Sony platforms.

I’m the one who actually asked Mr. Kamitani about bringing their stuff to Steam. We really need a japanese brawler of the Quality/Caliber of Dragon’s Crown on Steam. There’s nothing like it right now. I fear that the toxic Feminazi/SJW drama has been keeping them on hold.

I don’t get why companies are bending over backwards to acquiesce to this extremely small portion of the population. People have the right to not support things they don’t agree with. To cave in to the ravings of such minorities is robbing the majority of any choice. If a company has a good product, put it out for consumption. Let the cards fall where they may. Look at Chic-Fil-A for example. They stated their stance and told that minority to shove it. Sure they cried and protested, but they were there for that #5 combo the next day, because the shit is delicious. Their restaurants are still packed daily. If anyone should be ashamed of anything, it’s those groups for trying to force their way of life on others.

Considering Japan is a console dominated market, that may not be too far off the mark. The main reason why so few of the decent Japanese game devs port to PC is that there simply isnt the market for it in their home territory so for starters they just dont have the familiarity with PC game development they have with consoles. Hence why most of the time its a western division of the company that oversees the port, for good or bad. Personally, the news that Disgaea is being released on Steam in a coupe of days (and you better believe I already have it pre-ordered Doood :P) can only be seen as a potential start of a good thing (even with the slight issue regarding the pre-order OST)

  132. BaronKrause
    February 20, 2016 at 12:44 pm

Not at all. There is a huge difference between wanting a port/multi platform release of a game to also be on your platform of choice, and simply not wanting any other platform to have a game that is currently on your platform of choice. If someone is using a PC and bragging it shouldn’t bother you if that is not your platform of choice, annoying? Yes, but what should you care if you don’t actually want to play on that platform? I see idiots all the time bashing PS4/Xbox1 because they use 1 or the other, its not a PC exclusive personality trait.

Wanting a game to be released on your favored platform is simply a want, not wanting it to be released on another is just petty.

Vanillaware is one of the very, very few devs out there who’s games I could buy blindly with 100% faith in them. I think the only other one that would come even remotely close would be Platinum Games, but that latest turtles installment left me a slightly wary.

In any case, hopefully this happens sometime in the near future. Seeing how old this article is, I would’ve hoped it was done already, but I guess not. Fingers crossed.
