Undertale Launches for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on August 15

Toby Fox has announced the release date for Undertale on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

The game’s upcoming PlayStation releases are going down on August 15th, and will support crossbuy, meaning you get both versions of the game for the price of one.

If you pre-order the game, you’ll get a dynamic theme for PlayStation 4 by Truant Pixel, featuring art by Merrigo and a new minute-long music track by Toby Fox.

Finally, Fangamer is going to provide retail and collector’s edition versions of the game, which are set for a release sometime in September.

The collector’s edition includes:

  • The complete UNDERTALE soundtrack: Over 100 songs on 2 CDs
  • UNDERTALE sheet music booklet featuring six songs with annotations by Toby Fox
  • A 14k gold-plated brass music box locket
  • A sturdy matchbox-style collector’s box
  • A standard edition copy of UNDERTALE for PS4, PS Vita, or PC

All standard editions include:

  • A 24-page storybooklet illustrated by Temmie Chang

Undertale is currently available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

It’s so funny that Nintendo fans thought this would come to the Wii U first. Ha!

To be fair, it’s because the developer wanted it to come to a Nintendo platform and really didn’t care all that much about it coming to PlayStation.

A storybooklet for a game with no plot, no character, no talent, and no point. Brilliant. The Homestuck kickstarter must be really hard up for cash if they blew through $2 million and still need this loser to prop it up with sales from his 0/10 non-game.

It’s worth playing if you liked EarthBound and has some pretty neat ideas on a meta level. Parts of the fanbase is awful… But welcome to the internet.

Mind you, this was for the $10 version of Steam. Not sure I’d spend $25 on a physical version and I don’t know what it’s going to cost on PSN.

I’ve heard some things about it that I don’t really like, like the moral system being completely nuts. Not killing anyone, even NPCs that attack you is a bit too pacifist for my tastes.

This game just wants to make itself constantly relevant, huh? Sorry, but there are better RPGs for the Vita and PS4. Oh, but I will fully express my sympathy for any completionist going into this game for the first time; this game does not have the best opinion of your kind.

Copying another game’s style doesn’t mean it’s good. It indeed had good ideas but squandered a promising premise. Fandom notwithstanding, the game itself has a load of issues on its own.

Nintendo refused to allow the game on the console due to quality concerns, despite Fox’s begging.

He had no choice but to release it for PS4 instead.

If Fox really expected this game to be on a Nintendo console he clearly failed to do his research. (And frankly, I’m glad this mess of a game won’t be on the Switch or 3DS.)

  16. Sean Sharpe

    July 18, 2017 at 4:46 pm

Oh, it’s a flawed game. It’s also a game I think people should play.

Maybe I love it because EarthBound, twenty-two years after its initial US release still remains my favorite game of all time and it reminds me a lot of it.

Maybe it’s because, in general, I’m a sucker of games that find ways to marry mechanics and narrative… Especially because what draws to me games in the first place is their mechanics.

But it’s one of those games, I think folks should play before they judge… No matter what your judgement is. Mind you, I wouldn’t think this if it wasn’t a $10 that can be finished in about eight hours… But for what it is, it’s something I’d recommend to most people.

  17. Sean Sharpe
    Sean Sharpe
    July 18, 2017 at 4:50 pm

    For one ending, yes.

But the game doesn’t really treat you like shit for killing the folks that attack you. One character does, yes, and others might call you out for killing specific characters… But folks overstate the “don’t kill anyone” bit.

  18. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 4:52 pm

Oh, I definitely played the game. And I despise it. But on the other hand, I suppose I would recommend it to people, if only to present them with an example of flawed narrative and direction when it comes to creating an indie game. For example, actually applying incentive to the game and NOT attempting to dissuade completionists if you’re trying to make a damned RPG of all things.

  19. Mr0303
    July 18, 2017 at 4:57 pm

If it’s the “good” ending then it pretty much speaks for itself.

So there is a character that is a constant moralising busybody and some others that are less so. Yeah, I think I’ll pass.

  20. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 5:01 pm

Not to mention the 4th wall break made for the sole purpose of calling you a murderous asshole psychopath, as well as the ending urging you not to replay the game.

Undertale’s a cool game with a cancerous fanbase. I get the feeling most of the hate it gets is either from people that think any game that isn’t as morally black and white as DOOM is inherently worthless, pretentious hipster shit, or just people that can’t get past the whole “cancerous fanbase” thing.

  22. TheOnceAndFutureKing
    July 18, 2017 at 5:08 pm

Its already got two Earthbound games, no need for an SJW knock off

  23. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 5:08 pm

I hate it because of its flaws. One such flaw being its black and white morality, something I really dislike when it comes to the topic of ethics (yet, it’s something that the game seems to pride itself on), as well as how heavy handed it is about it. Undertale’s indeed quite pretentious, though.

  24. Mr0303
    July 18, 2017 at 5:08 pm

    That certainly doesn’t sound fun.

  25. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 5:10 pm

If that doesn’t sound fun, then don’t go into Undertale with the mindset of a completionist (or, you know, someone who’d want to experience everything in the game they’ve paid money for). Going through what the game considers the worse route will permanently lock you out of a good ending, even if you replay the game as a pacifist. Nope. No more happy ending for you.

  26. Mr0303
    July 18, 2017 at 5:12 pm

What? That is definitely a design flaw in my view. It’s insane to lock you out of an ending because you chose to play the arsehole the first time around. Screw this. As I stated Sonic would suffice instead.

  27. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 5:18 pm

I know, right? But it’s even more baffling that people DEFEND this design flaw.

One of my favorite games ever. I’ve drawn a stupid amount of fan art for this thing, even had one piece featured in a charity art book! (fun fact, people have threatened death on me over the fan art, what a great fan base!)

Already ordered the collectors edition and am ready to go for another round!

  32. CatCouch

I assume it’s the anti-fans. I think I was one of the early people to draw sexy Toriel art and had about a year and a half of people freaking out on me for it. All it did was bring more attention to my art~

  33. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 6:04 pm

Ah, I see. Geez, sorry to hear about that. You’ve probably seen from my comments that I dislike Undertale, and I’m not very fond of “sexy” furry either, but to threaten death on someone for that is fucking low.

  34. CatCouch
    July 18, 2017 at 6:33 pm

I think my art is targeted now because it’s the most commented on on sites like Deviant Art. I don’t think they care, it’s just become a popular spot to throw down some anonymous hate. Most people encourage me to draw more dirty Undertale art!

I wish I could keep some of the more threatening comments but people tend to hide them afterwords. Oh well, I still have gems like this!

That’s the longest comment chain on DA I’ve ever seen, I’m honored it’s on my art!

  35. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 6:38 pm

As much as I dislike furry porn, there are worse things on DA and other sites. Honestly, I usually just keep away as opposed to raging about it.

  36. CatCouch
    July 18, 2017 at 6:43 pm

At least the people who rage about it can be entertaining!

Real speak: I wish more people would just leave the things they dislike alone, It really pains me to see the amount of fighting over women in games now. No one should be changing the art in games to appease loud vocal minorities who likely don’t care about games.

  37. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 6:46 pm

I know, right? I mean it’s one thing to criticize something. It’s another to bitch and moan that something be changed in a game because it triggers you. And the people that do this probably won’t even play these games anyway.

I’m sure there is a difference between disliking/criticizing something and wishing for death on the people who enjoy it while trying to prevent them from creating fan art.

  44. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 8:05 pm

First off, is that at all possible to do on Steam? Second, if that’s an option, why does it have to be? At least with some games where you can get varying types of endings, you’re simply able to replay your file or do something differently to get a different result. No need to delete your main file whatsoever.

  45. Jettythesunfish
    July 18, 2017 at 8:07 pm

I may hate Undertale, but I’m not gonna tell people to kill themselves for liking it or drawing fanart of it.

  46. Riosine
    July 18, 2017 at 8:56 pm

a)Sure since saves are stored locally. So Just Tell Window Search to look for the word “Steam” in your main hard drive to locate the folder where these are stored.

Alternatively open the game and make a new save file and then tell window search to look for any Modified fileswithin a lapse of 5 minutes.
Or simply re-install the game and tell it to delete saves.

    b) Its because the game uses a lot of savefiles to give the illusion of keeping track of your playthroughs.
So the only way to reset the game is by deleting them

Comment chains like this are the main reasons I always look at the comments. Despite very different outlooks we are shockingly able to be a part of the same community, and even share morals. Ideological zealotry (taking offense) that leads to violence or threats thereof is the real enemy of open discourse and common wellbeing. Good on you my dudes.

  56. lucben999
    July 19, 2017 at 12:13 pm

The genocide route requires that you REALLY go out of your way to kill absolutely everything, that you hunt down and exterminate every last monster by grinding every room for an annoying amount of time without missing a single one. Nobody’s going to do that the first time around unless they read how to do it and then inevitably read a warning about the “tainted” save afterward (which is trivial to get around as another comment mentioned). I don’t imagine anyone will manage to go full Hitler on their first playthrough without a guide even if they’re trying to do it.

Also the genocide route is by far the most fascinating part of the game.

  58. CatCouch

Yep, I find most gaming forums and sites like this to be good places for discussing games since we’re allowed to have different views and disagree with each other.

I’m on GameFAQ’s all the time and it’s alright because people disagree in equalish numbers so debates are heated. The one forum I’ve had real problems with is NeoGAF. They tend to punish “wrong think” with temp or perma-bans. Now it’s an echo chamber with some of the more hateful commenters on it because they can’t be questioned and shun debate with the “get ’em out of here” logic. Ironic, huh?

  59. Jettythesunfish
    July 19, 2017 at 3:04 pm

  60. lucben999
    July 19, 2017 at 3:34 pm

It’s only punishment if you look at it that way. As I said, it’s the most fascinating part of the game IMO and has by far the best boss fights in it.

  62. Jettythesunfish

Uhh, you don’t think being unable to attain a good ending because you wanted to experience everything in the game can be considered punishment? Hell, the only way to get the good ending is by being an ultra-pacifist.

  63. lucben999
    July 19, 2017 at 4:11 pm

Pacifist is for the “happiest” ending and pretty much everybody who does the genocide route has already done the pacifist route beforehand. It always goes normal route -> pacifist -> genocide with some people who take the meta stuff a little too seriously resetting their save and doing another pacifist route afterward to leave their save in a “happy” state.

  64. Jettythesunfish

Fandoms for these things can get ridiculous, huh? It seems like the usual, everyone hates everyone and everything situation. Fan policing, I guess the term is, is where fandoms really go wrong.

Did the creator of the show insult straight males towards the beginning there? Geez. I remember the fan artist that was bullied to a suicide attempt because she didn’t represent the characters correctly. That’s terrifying. People tried that cyber-bullying kill yourself stuff with my Undertale art too but it doesn’t really work on people like me who draw erotic art. It just makes me stronger!

Funny thing is, Tumblr fully embraced my dirty Undertale art, it’s by far my most popular art. Weird.

I approve of lesbian stuff though, gay art is great. I love seeing it in Korra and Life is Strange, I even drew sexy art of LiS! I don’t watch SU so I can’t comment there, I guess it suffers from the type of hate you get from far left progressives, if this video is correct.
