This Guy Managed to Play Doom with Toasters

We’ve seen Doom running on ATM machines, tiny PCs, and now … being played with toasters?

Featured above, Youtuber Vexal has seemingly figured out how to configure a (newer) toaster to run as an input device, on a Windows PC. It appears that newer toasters have an industry standard microcontroller, to regulate the heat on the toaster’s micro-coils.

What does this mean for the regular PC gamer/hobbyist? It has a USB port on the toaster’s logic board, which presumably means it could do something when hooked up to a PC. Lo and behold, the toaster seems to be configurable to input keystrokes on the PC.

The problem here is that most toasters only have one form of interactivity, i.e. the single lever. The solution? Run multiple toasters as various singular inputs for a game! If you watch to the end, you’ll witness the insanity as Vexal tries playing id Software’s Doom, with three toasters.

So what do you guys think? Real? Fake? Completely insane?

Sadly it’s only CONTROLLING Doom with a toaster, but maybe we’ll get it running some day.

I really feel like trying it 4 Toasters for controlling with WASD which could be used by feets on the ground and the rest on the desk to reload change weapons and shoot

I can’t tell if this is a joke or not. The logic seems fair if toasters do come with the USB ports for simple software but the random flailing at the end doesn’t look convincing.

Well, I… huh. I’m speechless.nI guess we’ll have to come up with a new joke soon, since it’s actually becoming possible to play with toasters.

Almost definitely faked playing it, but the idea behind it could be solid.nnnAnyone got a few bucks to throw towards spare toasters?

The gameplay at the end was horribly faked.”toast” is also not a valid cmd prompt command, so I very much doubt this is actually legit. It’s a funny parody video though, and slightly more believable than playing Doom ON a toaster, which is the end goal of trying to play Doom on literally everything. Some day we’ll get there.
