Star Fox 64 native PC port released by ambitious fans

Star Fox 64 has remained a fan-favorite for years, though it will likely never be on PC – officially at least. Some enterprising fans have released a fully native PC version of the game.

The latest release from the Harbour Masters team, Star Fox 64 (dubbed Starship for their team) is now fully and natively playable on Windows, meticulous work converting the original ROM into a native executable.

Fans can expect a whole host of new features for the native Star Fox 64 PC port including ultrawide resolution support, a fully unlocked framerate, and even support for rumble with controllers that support it. You can grab the Star Fox 64 PC port release here and make sure to follow the steps for converting the ROM over.

The key takeaway here is that Star Fox 64 PC port is running natively on Windows and while it does require an original and legally obtained ROM to convert it into the native Windows version. This means it runs entirely on native code and not the original ROM, which Nintendo would have legal qualms about.

Another big deal with Star Fox 64 running natively on PC with its code ported over is that now fans can easily mod the crap out of the game – or possibly make new fan content that adds to the game.

Originally released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1997, Star Fox 64 was one of the most iconic games of its generation and helped Nintendo pioneer its foray into 3D visuals and gameplay. A stereoscopic 3D port for the 3DS was released in 2011 and a reimagining of the game for the Wii U, Star Fox Zero, was released in 2016. The game has also been ported to Nintendo Switch Online back in 2021.
