Square Enix trademarked Tactics Ogre: Reborn in Japan

Tactics Ogre: Reborn

We’ve learned Square Enix trademarked Tactics Ogre: Reborn in Japan, news discovered from a new legal filing this week.

The new trademark for Tactics Ogre: Reborn was discovered (via Renka_schedule), suggesting a new game in the series or possibly a new remake is in the works.

The most recent mainline game in the “Ogre” strategy RPG franchise was Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for the Game Boy Advance.

This was the final game by Quest Corporation before they were acquired by Square, after which both former-Quest staff (now at Square) and internal Square staff worked on Final Fantasy Tactics A2, as well as a PSP remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

A couple years ago Square Enix really committed to their new fancy HD-2D graphics style, so much so they actually trademarked the style and the name.

More recently, after the success of their various new HD-2D games and some promising new remakes, Square Enix’s president Yosuke Matsuda literally demanded their staff produce more games in that style – so it’s possible Tactics Ogre: Reborn is their next HD-2D remake.

As with any of these new trademark filings, we’ll likely not hear anything about Tactics Ogre: Reborn until it’s officially announced. We’ll keep you guys posted.
