Someone made a Persona-style Golden Girls parody game

Golden Girls

Atlus’ flagship Shin Megami Tensei Persona games are a pinnacle for the RPG genre and influenced many. Fan projects have arisen, too, and one project recreates the iconic TV sitcom The Golden Girls, but as a Persona-like RPG.

Titled cutely The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX, the new fan/parody game is being developed by two fans: Joey Pagano and Chris Lindgren.

As one can expect, the fan game asks the question: what if four elderly Miami women were the stars of their own JRPG? Will they finally find fulfillment later in life, or maybe even true love?

“What started as a joke has quickly spiraled into a playground of ideas meant to explore just how much we can push our skills and retain our sanity with our own brand of humor,” the project’s site states.

They added, “Simply put, this is Persona 5’s gameplay replaced with the context of The Golden Girls. There is no reason for why we used that coat of paint other than ‘how far can we take this joke.'”

The game’s site also says a playable demo was supposed to have been released back in 2021 – that seems to have never happened but a new trailer was shared over the weekend that got the internet buzzing:

Here’s a look at its latest trailer:

The game is somewhat of an amalgamation of various flagship Persona titles and not just Persona 5, fans can expect all the hallmarks of that RPG series ranging from its battle system, its day to day activities, the bonding system, and more.

As with any fan project – this will be one hundred percent free when it releases, which is apparently sometime in holiday 2023.
