Sega: No Current Plans for Sonic Mania Sequel

Despite Sega’s latest throwback release, Sonic Mania, being generally well-received (we liked it quite a bit!), it’s not a mainline entry like how its counterpart Sonic Forces was designed. A new interview (via Famitsu) with series producer Takashi Iizuka has more details on the title, how it was received, and more.

When asked for a sequel, Iizuka joked saying perhaps the next one will be Sonic Mania Dash, but then confirmed after the physical version for Sonic Mania, the team feels they’ve done everything they can for the project.

While he doesn’t rule out that a sequel could happen – this is a clear indication there are no current plans for a sequel.

Iizuka noted that after the game’s initial release they were surprised by how well it was received, most notably overseas in North America and Europe. He also attributed the increasing adoption of the Nintendo Switch as a factor with the continual sales for the game.

If you want Sega to make a Sonic Mania sequel, make sure to Tweet at Sonic the Hedgehog and Tweet to Sega (here for Japan), as well as other forms of social media.

The new and enhanced version of Sonic Mania, Sonic Mania Plus, is launching on July 17th at retail storefronts for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch. You can read more about what is included with the new version here.

Sonic Mania is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find my review for Sonic Mania here (I absolutely love and recommend the game!).
