Sega has dashed the hopes of retro enthusiasts by confirming they have no plans for more mini or retro consoles in the future.
The news that Sega is shelving plans for any future mini retro consoles like a Sega Saturn Mini or a Sega Dreamcast Mini comes from the current CEO of Sega America and Europe, Shuji Utsumi.
While Utsumi got his start helping with the launch of the original PlayStation in North America, he joined Sega in 1996 and stayed at the company through the release of the Sega Dreamcast. His latest tenure at Sega, though, is clearly focused on shaking things up like their old days.
When asked if Sega would do more retro consoles, Utsumi said future mini consoles like the Sega Genesis Mini or the Sega Astro City Mini are not in their plans.
“I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me. I want to embrace modern gamers.” Shuji Utsumi said to The Guardian.
He added, “We are not a retro company. We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.”
Sega was later asked for clarification on what Utsumi said and if they indeed have no plans for future retro consoles – the company confirmed they have no plans for more retro or mini consoles.
