Pokemon Sun and Moon Producer Denies New Pokemon Being Inspired by Donald Trump

trump-10-19-16-1

The new demo for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon is out, and with it fans are going wild discovering new Pokemon – and datamining the rest that aren’t in the demo.

Two Pokemon in particular have gotten lots of fans speculating their inspiration: Yungoos and Gumshoos. The seemingly Mustela-like creatures bear a strong resemblance to a possible candidate for the next President of the United States: Donald Trump.

When asked if the Pokemon are really inspired by the orange-God emperor, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon producer Junichi Masuda gave an interesting response:

“It’s a very American-centric question I think,” said Masuda in an interview with Game Informer. “And actually a lot of people sent me comparison photos on Twitter pointing out the resemblance. But we had started the design of this Pokémon a long time back, and we didn’t have any intention to make it look like Donald Trump.”

It’s worth pointing out the game’s official description for the orange-tufted creatures says it’s known as a “big eater that is never satisfied” and one that has “a terrible temper when it’s hungry.” That certainly sounds like Trump!

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are launching for the Nintendo 3DS on November 18th in North America and November 23rd in Europe.

I played the demo this morning. It’s really short, like maybe a half hour at most, and it’s about what I expected.

The UI is a bit more polished, like how the game tags move type effectiveness after you successfully defeat a pokemon for the first time. Pokemon games never really progress much in the plot department, but they always improve the UI.

The music is the same old same old, but with a troplical flair. I don’t know if this is new or not, but they added a “Bump into stuff” sound, when you walk into a person or a wall, and it’s really irritating.

The textures still look like PSX level garbage, which isn’t helped much by the switch to full-proportion models. Between that and the camera angles, they really seem to be aping Yokai Watch. The demo has no actual 3D, and everyone still has a really unsettling moral disconnect towards enslaving intelligent creatures and forcing them to fight for your amusement.

As the demo begins, your protagonist has moved to a new town, like you do. Mom sends you to the town hall to register your new address, then faced with bureaucratic delays, lets you loose to explore a demo-sized fraction of the city. The coffee shop operator informs you that the owner is away “For probably about another month” which is tongue-in-cheek clever, but the pokemart dude tells you they are all out of stock, which is a damn lie because I can see the goods on the shelf behind him.

Less than five minutes into exploring your new home, you and your new friend get mugged by a gang of wiggers and challenged to a street fight while a bunch of adults stand around watching. This seems like a GREAT place to live, thanks Mom. Thankfully, your mail-order Disco Ninja Frog shurikens the shit out of their tiny little helpless Trump Ferret and they run away.

Apparently, in this “region,” it is customary for 11 year old boys to undergo a test of manhood, though I’m not sure you should be taking advice from a masochistic professor who enjoys being beaten up by his own pokemon as a hobby. Is this why it’s called Pokemon S&M? As part of the test, I swear I am not making this up, he instructs you to hitch a ride to a secret location with a creepy old man who just happens to be standing nearby.

Once you arrive at the proving grounds, largely unmolested, Professor Junpei shows up and gives you a Pikachu, because of fucking course you have a Pikachu, and sends you out to play Pokemon Snap. Except this time, whenever you take a photo, the pokemon tries to kill you. Time for more Disco Ninja Frog.

Now that you’re a man, the ridiculously low-res big sis of Team Wigger saunters up and challenges you to a battle, bringing one measley Golbat to the table. Of course, this is just a formality to introduce a tutorial for S&M’s gimmick, “Z-Moves.” They slap an eminently merchandisable “Yokai Watch” on your wrist, and while I don’t know if it’s strictly necessary to do so, you perform some kind of stupid sentai pose in order to bring out your Pikachu’s inner Goku, murderizing the Golbat like it didn’t already have a type weakness. Roll preview montage trailer and credits.

Seems like people had more fun dissecting the demo’s data for spoilers than actually playing it.

As for the sound of you hitting walls and such? That’s been around for quite a while now. I don’t remember which game it was, but one of them had the sound far too loud and it bothered me so much I didn’t even run in the cities.
