Nintendo Will Develop Mobile Apps

As part of their financial results briefing, Nintendo has partly confirmed the rumors that have been swirling regarding their development teams working on games for mobile devices.

Although Nintendo president Satoru Iwata partially denied those rumors, it seems that Nintendo are not ruling out the possibilities of mobile app development. Iwata had this to say:

“Let me emphasize that this does not mean simply supplying Nintendo games on smart devices. Taking advantage of smart devices means connecting with all consumers, including those who do not own Nintendo’s video game systems, through smart devices and communicating the value of our entertainment offerings, thus encouraging more people to participate in Nintendo platforms. I will elaborate on this point later.”

Although this is a very broad statement, Iwata followed this up with a very blunt statement when pressed about releasing games or apps with licensed Nintendo characters or properties:

“Accordingly, I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement.”

So there you have it, they’ll be working on mobile apps or games, although they won’t confirm or deny if we’ll see Mario on iOS. We’ll keep you guys posted.
