Following recent updates to the Nintendo Classics apps for NES, SNES, and Game Boy, dataminers discovered hidden references to an unreleased challenge system internally known as “CYCLONE.”
According to information uncovered in the update files, players would be dropped into specific moments of classic games and tasked with completing objectives.
These challenges could involve finishing a level within a time limit, collecting certain items, or defeating a set number of enemies before failing.
The setup sounds remarkably similar to the objective-based missions found in Nintendo’s beloved NES Remix series on Wii U.
However, the new system appears to focus on structured challenges rather than the more chaotic remix stages that altered game rules or mixed characters between titles.
Perhaps the most exciting part is that the feature seems designed to pull from the entire Nintendo Switch Online Classics library. That means challenges could potentially span dozens, if not hundreds, of games across the NES, SNES, and Game Boy catalogs.
We might get more information during tomorrow’s Nintendo newly announced Direct.
