After the runaway success of the Minecraft Movie, Universal has reportedly greenlit another game to movie adaptation with Sega’s classic OutRun racing franchise.
The new OutRun movie is reportedly being developed at Universal with blockbuster director Michael Bay to direct and rising star Sydney Sweeney to produce. Jayson Rothwell (Polar, Arachnid) is handling the script.
Bay is also reportedly producing the new OutRun movie alongside his Platinum Dunes studio partner Brad Fuller, who have a first-look deal with the company. It’s worth noting the film is in production with Sweeney only having a role producing.
Sega’s Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3, Knuckles, and the forthcoming Golden Axe adaptations) is also producing alongside Sega Corp COO/president Shuji Utsumi overseeing the entire project for the company and IP holder.
Details on the OutRun movie plot are scant or vague at best this early in the production, though it’s worth mentioning the series originated in the 1986 arcade game of the same name, which started the franchise. The game simply let players race through Europe-inspired tracks to a bopping soundtrack.
OutRun was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the most popular arcade games of the 1980s. It had a massive impact on racing games thereafter, and even spawned its own subgenre of synthwave music inspired by 80s aesthetics and musical notes.
The last OutRun game to be released was the 2009 game OutRun Online Arcade for both Xbox Live Arcade and the PS3, though it was delisted a year later on PS3 and two years later on Xbox 360.
