Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Pulled from Steam to Add “Important Updates”

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Pulled from Steam

Square Enix has pulled the classic action-adventure game Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver from Steam, noting the game had to be pulled for “important updates.”

The message on the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Steam page now reads:

“Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale to work on some important updates. Please check back soon!”

While the game remains currently unavailable on Steam, it’s still available to buy over on the GOG store. Square Enix provided a brief statement (via VGC) that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver will be available to buy on Steam soon, but didn’t elaborate what these “important updates” include.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was released back in 1999 for Windows PC and the original PlayStation, followed by a Sega Dreamcast port in 2000. It was developed by Crystal Dynamics and had Amy Hennig directing as well. It saw success and went on to span a few sequels, although Square has been unsuccessful in reviving the series since acquiring parent company Eidos in 2009.

The most notable attempt at a revival was the Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun reboot, which purportedly was cancelled in its pre-alpha state, back in 2012. There was also the oddball multiplayer game Nosgoth developed by Rocket League studio Psyonix, which ultimately got canned in 2016 as well.

Indie darling Forever Entertainment recently announced a deal with Square Enix to develop “several” remakes based on a single brand owned by the company – although further details are scant. Could Square still be attempting to revive the beloved cult-classic series? Sound off in the comments below!
