Hironobu Sakaguchi Announces Terra Battle 2 for PC and Smartphones

This week’s Famitsu has revealed Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s latest game – Terra Battle 2.

It’s being developed in collaboration between Mistwalker and Silicon Studio – the former is in charge of artwork, sound, and scenario planning, the latter is in charge of programming and other assets.

The story campaign in the game lasts roughly 50 chapters, with Sakaguchi wanting to release a new chapter every Friday, like a television drama. The first Terra Battle will continue to get support, as a major update is planned for the end of this month.

The game is likened to a new challenge for Sakaguchi, as the creator is taking on building up the very “Terra World” itself. Alongside the news for the sequel is a separate but related game in the franchise – Terra Wars. You can read more about that and Sakaguchi’s plans for a new franchise here.

A western release wasn’t confirmed.

Sakaguchi is like the George Lucas of JRPGs. Just because he made some good games, people will still throw money at him when he makes garbage like this.

So much for that collaboration with Silicon Studios, I’m going to go back to playing FF6 now…

Terra Battle was pretty good for a mobile game. I kept expecting them to port it as a full on SRPG but they never did.

Definitely seeming that way. Someone who people remember made something cool a million years ago, but now is just known for making bullshit.

I’m sure its a good game on its own merits, but this is the guy who gave us Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger, you would think someone with this kind of vision would feel more inclined to make something just as epic today.

I don’t really get why he’s stuck making mobile games, surely there must be a publisher who’d want that “Created by the father of Final Fantasy” name recognition on one of their games.

Having played most of his works (but not the latest few, admittedly), I can say this definitively: FF7 was a low point of his career, and Chrono Trigger was Yuji Horii (The guy behind the Dragon Quest games) more than anything else.

How was FF7, the most critically acclaimed JRPG of all time, the low point of his career? That was his peak. The beginning of his downfall was that shitty Spirits Within movie that almost bankrupt Square, and his low point is now where he makes mobile RPGs.

I get he wasn’t the boss of Chrono Trigger, but still, that was the kind of game he was involved with as opposed to what hes doing now.

Its weird because he founded the company, so you think he would take advantage of his creative freedom by making a killer console JRPG.

Maybe Mistwalker just doesn’t have the cash right now. It’s a bit of a shame, because he does seem to be capable of making decent games after leaving Square, mobileshit seems like a waste of talent.

Id be more than happy if he at least made a solid 3DS game.

I’m unwilling to criticize Sakaguchi for this, because he’s one of the very few devs I know of, alongside my sensei Itagaki-san, how toxic Playstation as a brand really is and how they are responsible for the decline of quality in Japanese games at large for the past twenty years. There really isn’t a market for lower budget releases on Playstation consoles.

Ultimately developing for Smart phones is probably the best move for the studio to make right now, considering the kind of games they want to make.

I get the feeling that when people talk up “entitled gamers,” they’re referring to people like you.

“Betrayal?” Could you present me an example of the guy explicitly promising a new console project with Silicon Studio? ‘Cause to me it seems like you imagined up mountain ranges out of a vague announcement and are disappointed it isn’t reality.

    >you would think

That’s the problem, he’s not beholden to *your* expectations, so he can’t be blamed for you feeling disappointed. That’s on you.

Who knows, maybe he’s tired and he wants to do something different.

I don’t know why I’m typing this out, but I’m just alarmed at the reaction and how unreasonable it seems. Maybe I don’t understand the situation deeply enough.

Well he made a name for himself by being involved with the development of some of the best JRPGs in the genre, so its reasonable to expect disappointment from his fans when he resorts to mobile stuff which most of his fans don’t care for.

Why is this genius stuck making mobile games while all the idiots who currently work at SquareEnix continue to get handed AAA game budgets to fritter away over 10 years?

PSN gets 20 new low budget games added every week…. apparently somebody who owns a Playstation is buying them.

Yeah, I don’t think he has the money. He’s stated previously that he’d make sequels to lost odyssey the last story etc, if publishers paid. He stated that he didn’t feel right to take the public’s money so he refuses kickstarter and etc.

He could be doing it for personal freedom. I imagine he’s much happier with his life now that he doesn’t answer to square. He seems to just do whatever projects he enjoys. I remember him specifically mentioning the original Terra battle in a desire to work with a programmer who primarily developed for smartphones.

Ouch. So basically Playstation drove out the budget JP devs and replaced them with budget western devs, some of whom produce crap even Steam wouldn’t accept. This is a travesty.
