Fortnite March Through Time Event Adds Dr. Martin Luther King Speech and Activities

Fortnite Dr. Martin Luther King

Epic Games and TIME Studios have launched a Fortnite event, showing the history and playing the iconic speech by Dr. Martin Luther King.

Epic Games explain that, presented by TIME Studios, they have shared the D.C. 63 map; a reimagined version of Washington, DC created by community members. Players can visit the United States National Mall, and the Lincoln Memorial where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his 17-minute “I have a dream” civil rights speech on August 28th, 1963.

The “experience” features museum-style points of interest, and “collaborative mini-game quests.” These activities promise to “progress players through the experience and bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together.” Players can also unlock a D.C. 63 Locker spray by completing challenges.

You can find the March Through Time trailer below.

Players have certainly been united in at least one way; how surreal the experience is as such an iconic speech being heard over The Joker and Rick Sanchez dancing. Players have no weapons and cannot harm one another, but they can still dance.

Epic Games have seemingly learned their lesson from last time they held a sensitive event. They had previously included a We The People presentation discussing racial discrimination in Fortnite, only for players to pelt the screen with tomatoes.

Nonetheless, some feel that the inclusion undermines how important the moment was for civil rights. Some have lamented that children may first learn of Dr. King through this, but take away that he is Fortnite character [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Others felt it was out of place in Fortnite [1, 2, 3, 4.
