Disgaea Series Sells Over 5 Million Units

Disgaea sold 5 million

Nippon Ichi Software have announced [1, 2, 3] that the Disgaea tactical RPG series has sold over 5 million units.

In their announcement, Nippon Ichi note (Translation: DeepL) that the series has been well received not only in Japan, but North America, Europe, Asia, and in other regions. To celebrate, Nippon Ichi are hosting a sale on the franchise and its DLC- albeit only in Japan.

The series began in 2003 with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and would later result in a series that would become synonymous with Nippon Ichi. So much so the Prinny, a creature made of the soul of a human sent to the Netherworld for servitude as punishment, has become the company’s mascot.

The games almost parodied tactical RPGs; encouraging players to power-level characters to absurd levels to meet ever-growing challenges across an often comical quest. Each character can also be “reincarnated;” starting again at level 1 with better stat growths.

Players can enter random dungeons with items and characters to further enhance them, and adjust EXP gain, difficulty, and more for ever-escalating challenges. Thanks to the above, it’s not uncommon to see damage in the millions, or even billions.

The Disgaea series games are set in the Netherworld; where doing wrong is good, and motivations are usually to attain more power. Whether the main characters are mighty demonic beings fallen from grace, or seeking to overthrow mighty Overlords or worse, players rise to the challenge with a party of allies.

The most recent title in the series is Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. As previously reported, the Netherworlds across the multiverse are being destroyed by the God of Destruction; a being that appears without rhyme or reason and devastates all in its wake.

Yet, a young zombie boy called Zed waltzes into the Darkest Assembly, and claims to have defeated it. While Overlord Ivar doubts his capabilities, the secret may lie in Super Reincarnation. The game’s Season Pass was recently announced, along with a trailer for the first DLC characters.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is available in the west on Nintendo Switch. The game is available in Japan on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
