Atlus are teasing seven announcements for the JRPG Persona series’ 25th anniversary, the first to be announced in August.

The new Japanese anniversary website express the heartfelt gratitude for the series reaching over 15 million sales worldwide. By September, the JRPG series will have celebrated over 25 years.


The first title was Revelations: Persona, launched September 20th 1996 for the original PlayStation. Since then the series has had five mainline entries; along with enhanced versions, dungeon crawling, fighting, rhythm game spin-offs.

The games are a spin-off series to the Shin Megami Tensei series. While still featuring the push-turn system that rewards overwhelming foes with weaknesses and critical hits for extra turns, the Persona series features plots revolving around the life of teenagers.

Players typically enter a Japanese high-school setting, where they find local area’s misfortunes and mysteries are the result of supernatural and occult incidents. While taking on monsters, spirits, demons, and gods; they also grow closer to their friends between the life-or-death situations. Improving these bonds and taking part in fun activities also grants players more abilities that ultimately make them stronger.

The 25th Anniversary will be celebrated with merchandise, events, collaborations, anime, and information on upcoming games. The first of these includes an announcement in August of this year, with a total of seven announcements to be made.

In addition to the 15 million strong series’ sales, Persona 5 Royal has sold an estimated 1.8 million since launch, while Persona 4 Golden on Steam has sold an estimated 900,000 copies worldwide. Persona 5 Strikers has sold 1.3 million copies as of February 20th, 2020.

The soundtrack for Persona 5 also had high praise, with cumulative shipments exceeding 100,000 copies. It debuted in the Japanese album rankings as the fifth best seller during its launch week (January 2017), selling an estimated 29,341 copies.
