PS5 Has Sold Twice as Well as Xbox Series X/S So Far This Year

PlayStation 5 Xbox Series

Compared to the Xbox Series X/S, the PlayStation 5 has sold almost twice as well according to a market analytics firm.

Data from Ampere Analysis concerning first quarter sales of video game consoles shows the PlayStation 5 reportedly outselling the new Xbox console almost 2 to 1. The firm cites the unpredictable availability of both consoles as an inhibitor on sales.

Both Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles are suffering from supply constraints and unpredictable availability. These conditions are expected to continue for the rest of 2021 as competition for components remains high, making it challenging for many CE companies to increase production. Under these conditions, both versions of PlayStation 5 combined outsold both versions of Xbox Series consoles by more than 2 to 1.

Although despite the lead that Sony has over Microsoft so far this year, Nintendo has managed to dwarf both of them. The Switch has moved more than twice as many units as even the PlayStation 5 (and thus, four times as many as the Xbox Series X/S).

Ampere Analysis

Although with the runaway success of last year’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons inspired by the ongoing pandemic, it’s of little surprise that the Nintendo Switch has continued to perform well.
