Final Fantasy XI Mobile Port Cancelled for Not Meeting Fan Expectations

Final Fantasy XI

Square Enix and Nexon have reportedly cancelled the mobile port of MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, due to it not meeting expectations fans have.

The game was Square’s first venture into MMO’s with the Final Fantasy series, and launched in 2002. It’s final main scenario launched in 2015, and the game’s PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 servers shut down in 2016. 2015 also saw the announcement of Nexon developed mobile app version of the game.

However, GameBiz.jp reports (translation: DeepL) that Final Fantasy XI R has been cancelled. Both companies had agreed to reallocate development staff to other projects, as the game was not meeting the expectations fans had for Final Fantasy in terms of creativity.

Other factors may also include the runaway success of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Despite a rocky start, the reboot was met with high praise. The game reached 14 million players in 2018, and has no doubt continued to grow with each expansion.

Final Fantasy XI is available for Windows PC (via Steam, and Square Enix).
