2K Sports and developer Visual Concepts have introduced free Black Lives Matter t-shirts to NBA 2K20, after the death and aftermath of George Floyd.

Kotaku reports that one of the in-game clothing stores is giving away three free t-shirts. They are all black with white text, saying “BLACK LIVES MATTER,” “I Can’t Breath,” or “Say Their Names.” You can find the image of those shirts (via Kotaku) below.

This led to in-game protest by players, wearing the clothes and running around the virtual world. One such protest was documented and seemingly led by Twitch streamer Zulie on Twitter [1, 2].

Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of 2K Games), also made other efforts. Along with NBA 2K20, Rockstar Games closed the servers for Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online two hours on June 4th to “honor the legacy of George Floyd.”

This comes amid the protests and subsequent riots across the US over the death of George Floyd. This has also resulted in delays and postponements by PlayStation, EA Sports, IGN, Guerrilla Collective, along with Activision and Infinity Ward with the Call of Duty franchise [1, 2].

Other video game companies have also took part in Blackout Tuesday (changing their profile pictures to a solid black image, along with only posting a solid black image on social media that day), and have offered donations or organized fund-raisers.

Many other US companies and organizations have offered their support of Black Lives Matter at this time. As such, it is entirely possible the other presentations and showcases currently set for June could be cancelled.

The last time NBA 2K20 ended up in the news, it was not positive. The game was slated for its lootbox and microtransaction systems, featuring casino-style slot machine mechanics and high prices [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

NBA 2K20 is available on Windows PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
