Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition Announced, Coming Soon

In their latest big livestream preview, Games Workshop has announced the 9th Edition of their long-running tabletop miniatures game, Warhammer 40,000.

Based on the details released so far, 9th Edition will be less of a new edition, and more of a tightening up and consolidation of the many rules supplements and campaign books released throughout the preceding three years that constituted 8th Edition.

There will be plenty of rules tweaks and new point costs, but the core foundation of the game doesn’t seem to be changing too much. In fact, all current codices, Psychic Awakening, and Vigilius books will work with the new edition until they are gradually phased out with new books.

Some of the highlights teased thus far includes a new Crusade system for campaigns, revamped rules for fliers, terrain, and tanks, and an advancement of the narrative that started in the currently ongoing Psychic Awakening series. It wasn’t outright stated that a new two-player starter is on its way, but the Q&A notes that the Dark Imperium box will be retired soon.

Games Workshop will also be kicking off 9th Edition with a much requested official army building and rules app. Not only that, but players will be able to redeem their physical 9th Edition books in the app to unlock the digital version.

Obviously, new miniatures were also showcased in the preview, including new sculpts for the Necron Warriors, Assault Intercessors, and a teaser trailer for the Silent King. The new Warhammer 40,000 website also shows some sort of new close combat unit of Marines with storm shields, power swords, and volkite chargers.

More information about 9th Edition will be released throughout June on the Warhammer Community site. The Q&A in the above Warhammer Community site link also answers some questions fans might currently have.
