Nintendo Will Not Lower Switch Price “For as Long as Possible”

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed during a Q & A session with investors, that there will not be a price-drop for the Nintendo Switch any time soon

In the Six-Month Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ending March 2020 Q & A Summery document, question #11 (page 5), features an investor question about the company’s pricing strategy for the Nintendo Switch console.

Furukawa confirmed there were no plans for the foreseeable future to lower the price of the system.

With the release of Nintendo Switch Lite at a different price point from Nintendo Switch, I don’t think you’ll need to lower the price of Nintendo Switch itself in the next year or two. I know that the profitability of hardware will increase as time passes after launch, but how much will it increase? I’d also like to hear about Nintendo’s pricing strategy.

Furukawa: We want to maintain the value of our products and sell them at their current price points for as long as possible, so we have no plans to reduce prices at this time. Because profitability can fluctuate depending on quantities produced in the future, we’re not estimating any specific decrease in cost. We want to improve profitability by increasing the number of units sold and selling the Nintendo Switch family hardware for as long as possible.”

As the investor themselves pointed out, the Nintendo Switch Lite’s cheaper price point combined with the console’s success means there may be less reason to lower the cost of either system.

The Nintendo Switch managed to achieve 10 million sales in Japan in November 2019. Other sale milestones for the Nintendo Switch include outselling the PlayStation 4 in Japan in May 2019, reaching 15 million sales in North America in October, as well as 41.67 million sales worldwide at the end of the same month.
