Niche Early Access- Merchant of the Skies, Jupiter Hell, and More

This is Niche Early Access. In this column, we regularly showcase various promising games that are currently in some form of early access or development, and haven’t reached full release. Please let us know if there’s a game you want us to showcase!

I’m back with another batch of promising games that recently entered Steam Early Access. Even if you don’t like buying games in Early Access, remember to wishlist any games that catch your attention so you’ll be notified when they get a full release.

Here’s 5 Early Access games that might be worth your attention:

Aquaculture Land
Developer: Maulidan Games
Platform: Windows PC
Price: $9.99 (Price may increase)

First up this week is Aquaculture Land, a management sim about running your own freshwater fish farm. Build ponds and stock them with a diverse range of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, taking special care to make accommodations to suit each species’ needs and requirements. You can hire employees and equipment to help automate some of the more mundane aspects of fish farming as your business grows. Take on special contracts for clients, or simply sell your fish on the open market to raise the funds you need to expand and stay in business.

Aquaculture Land will be in Early Access for at least four months.

Ethereal Enigma
Developer: PixelFade
Platforms: Windows PC, Mac
Price: $19.99

Ethereal Enigma is a slice of life VN with full voice acting and animated character models created with Live2D. On the way home after his first day of high school, the protagonist encounters a mysterious woman that tells him to make a wish at a shrine. After doing so, the protagonist unwittingly summons Erilynn, a beautiful princess from another world. The story is split between the protagonist’s daily life at school, and unraveling the mystery behind why Erilynn came to this world and how she can return home. Ethereal Enigma promises to deliver players a branching narrative and intricate relationship system, though the Early Access build currently only includes the first chapter of the story.

Ethereal Enigma is expected to get a full release next Summer.

Merchant of the Skies
Developer: Coldwild Games
Platforms: Windows PC, Mac, Linux
Price: $7.99 (Price will increase)

Merchant of the Skies is a sandbox trading sim where you are the captain of an airship in a magical world of floating towns and islands. Build your own merchant empire by buying and selling goods, accepting contracts, gathering resources, and exploring the world at your own pace. There’s also some light base building and tycoon management as your company expands and you find the most lucrative trade routes to exploit.

Merchant of the Skies will be in Early Access for about six months.

Jupiter Hell
Developer: ChaosForge
Platforms: Windows PC, Mac, Linux
Price: $24.99 (Price will increase)

Jupiter Hell is a sci-fi roguelike with retro-inspired mechanics and visual aesthetics that bear more than a passing resemblance to a certain classic FPS. Set on the moons of Jupiter, you play as a lone marine fending off a demonic invasion in a variety of procedurally generated facilities that have been overrun by the forces of Hell. Jupiter Hell is a traditional roguelike, so it uses a pseudo turn-based system where enemies only move and attack when you do. Tear your enemies apart with an arsenal of shotguns, grenades, chainsaws, and various other special abilities and gadgets.

Jupiter Hell doesn’t currently have a target release timeframe.

WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition
Developer: Eduweb
Platforms: Windows PC, Mac
Price: $14.99 (Price will increase)

Finally, we come to WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, a complete remake of the cult hit wolf simulator that started life as an edutainment game created by the Minnesota Zoo in 2007 before being picked up by its current devs, who have continuously updated and run the game ever since. This remake gives the game a fresh coat of paint, with updated graphics and mechanics. You play as a young male wolf in Yellowstone National Park that has just left his pack to set out on his own. Explore over 50 square kilometers of wilderness as you hunt, establish your own territory, find a mate (achieved in a family friendly way, so don’t get any twisted ideas you degenerate furries), and create your own wolf pack.

WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition currently includes the first episode of the game. The second will be released sometime early next year, at which point the game will leave Early Access.
