Nomura: We’re Considering Spinoffs Alongside the Final Fantasy VII Remake

While the release of Square Enix’s massive Final Fantasy VII remake is probably a ways off, that hasn’t stopped director Tetsuya Nomura from letting slip tidbits on its development.

Nomura said both himself and other old timers at Square are considering “various developments” as far as what they can release alongside the remake itself – which they’re already planning to expand into a trilogy. He teased something like a “Compilation” of Final Fantasy VII titles.

The news came at a private event for The World Ends With You: Final Remix (via Famitsu). Nomura teased that while he’s focusing on the completion and release of Kingdom Hearts III, he still talks up the Final Fantasy VII remake and how they can adapt it to modern times.

Nomura’s response came after a fan said they’d love to play Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII again. Lastly, Nomura said for now – please be patient for the return of Final Fantasy VII.

It’s worth pointing out Square did the same thing with their previous mainline Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XV, by releasing a number of companion games, apps, and media.

To date, Final Fantasy VII has received numerous spinoffs and trans media releases, including the aforementioned Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, and the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

All of the aforementioned titles were bundled into the official Compilation of Final Fantasy VII release, which Square launched alongside Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Nomura suggesting a new “Compilation” could mean the company is contemplating a number of spinoffs and trans media releases just like they did with the original Final Fantasy VII universe.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
