The last time we reported on Gungrave, the franchise was getting a Korean-developed mobile spinoff. Despite being an officially licensed release, many fans were hoping for something more like the PlayStation 2 original – the release that spawned a popular anime adaptation, as well as other game spinoffs.

Now, we’ve learned (via 4Gamer) that the same developer of the mobile spinoff, Iggymob, is working on a virtual reality-exclusive shooting-action game, based on the PlayStation 2 original. The game is set to launch for PlayStation VR first in Japan sometime later this year, followed by other VR devices like the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift later.

The game is described as a new entry within the Gungrave universe that makes use of optimized assets, and even features a new story that goes beyond the sequel, Gungrave: Overdose. The game’s classic infinite shooting, environment destruction, and “full break action” are all returning and being optimized for virtual reality.

The game will have both third-person and first-person gameplay mechanics, with the former utilizing the “full break action” and the latter utilizing dynamic shooting.

Finally, it’s worth pointing out that publisher Blueside and Iggymob are billing this game as a true release to the series’ legacy, noting original members from Red Entertainment are helping with the development of the title. They include: original Gunvrave illustrator Yasuhiro Nightow and composer Tsuneo Imahori.
