Yakuza Arrested for Shooting at Sega Sammy Chairman’s House

You read that headline right — real-life yakuza were arrested for a shooting at the residence of Sammy founder and now Sega Sammy (the folks behind the Yakuza game series) chairman Hajime Satomi, as reported by Tokyo police (thanks Jiji Press, via Tokyo Reporter).

The shooting happened around 8:35 AM in January of 2015, at the home of Satomi, in the Futabacho area. The reasoning behind the delay in apprehending the suspects is that security camera footage is all they really had to go by for the investigation.

The original suspects nabbed by Tokyo cops were not named, however, the most recent arrests included a real-life member of the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest group of the otherwise known as (to filthy gaijin) the yakuza.

On June 7th of this year, Tokyo police have arrested and accused Takahiro Yamamoto, a 54-year-old member of the crime syndicate, of firing a single bullet and dropping three unused shells at Satomi’s residence.

When the original shooting happened, a security guard notified Tokyo police after hearing gunfire, as well as finding the discarded shells. A light was found shattered, however thankfully no one was actually injured. The security footage showed two persons on a motorcycle around the time of the incident as well.

It’s not clear if the real intent was to actually murder Satomi or simply injure him, however Tokyo police believe Yamamoto ordered Takao Matushima and Hiroaki Yoshikawa, to carry out the crime. Both have been arrested and are being interrogated by police.

Considering how in 2014 there were only 6 gun deaths compared to 33,599 that happened in the US that year…

Between lacking half the population, that including suicide (64%), justified police shooting, including defensive gun use, that numbers not as impressive as you think it is even before how most of the remaining are in gun control havens like Chicago and California.

Japan just really isn’t that great an example against gun control measures. Japan and the US are completely different cultures, though, which makes the comparison not too meaningful. Really I can see the merits either way, especially if you have conscription like in Switzerland or Finland, but there’s little correlation between gun ownership and crime overall.

1,2) Let see (321.4M (usa) and 127M Japans; with 33,599 and 6 gun deaths respectively :
    (127M/6) / (321.4M/33,599)
    = 21.667M / 9565.75
    = 2265.

and that is read usa gun related deaths are 2265 TIMES higher than Japan.

    3) these are usa gun deaths not usa+mexico+canada gun death

4)umm a country that knows its a bad idea arming people that is stupid?

It’s not really a rumor. Sega owns a majority of the arcades in Japan, those arcades can only function with the help of the Yakuza. They might not be owned but they can’t survive without the Yakuza’s help.

It is the same exact link Nintendo had to the Yakuza over 100 years ago, but people want to always bring up Nintendo’s past ties to the Yakuza a century ago as if it is relevant in a modern conversation all the while Sega, and by extension the beloved ATLUS are much more in bed with the Yakuza on a day to day basis.

Isn’t the success of Sega’s arcade business due to their merger with Sammy Holding though? Like, Sammy’s claim to fame was arcades and pachinko machines. I know its cool to imagine the Yakuza having involvement in a large way with Sega, but taking everything into consideration, they may not be as much of a factor as you think.

Not that I disagree with your overall point, but there are some caveats to some your points.

    “>what is population”
    What is South Africa?
Or the other 8 countries in the rankings that have smaller populations but have higher per capita gun deaths via murder?

“>what is living on an island vs. living next to a pitifully unregulated border”
    What are the Phillipines?

“>what is an ancient country vs. a country that was literally founded with the use of guns”
To be fair Japan was using guns over 200 years before the US was a country and they hand a presence in Japan starting in 1511. In 1513 the first European Settlers landed in what would become the US.

The real argument here is Culture. Japan went super restrictive with their gun laws in the 17th century. But that still didn’t solve that 300 years of Civil War thing that happened there.

Still I agree, Japan’s gun control laws make damn sure that gun crime is super low. But there are many countries that have gun laws as strict or even more so that have higher gun death rates.

Doesn’t seem like it was meant to harm anyone, but was more of a warning. Shot one shot, then drop three shells probably a calling card/warning.

  42. Brimfyre

Well same logic applies. Sammy and Sega are one unit now. Amusement centers in Japan cannot operate, without the Yakuza. Pachinko especially is 100% controlled by the Yakuza.

I’m not saying the Yakuza are sitting around deciding how to handle the next Sonic title (thought that would explain a lot) but if you give money to Sega so of that is being funneled through organized crime.

Not much anyone can do about it, because clearly not even the government can stop it, but that is how it goes.

The US crippled Japan’s army to make it a poor man’s vassal state, no shit they lack military might. Prior to that they were a great power, fucking their neighbours handily and winning a war against Russia, which made the rest of the world treat it as equal to a Western power, and it took the US with British Empire support to take them down.

The way it works is when you win at pachinko you take those little balls to a shop next to the arcade and they trade the balls for your cash prize. Those shops are all owned and run by the Yakuza. Or most of them at least. So you can’t have one without the other.
