New Dragon Quest XI Gameplay, Details, Nintendo Switch Version Further Teased

Square Enix held a live stream event recently for Dragon Quest XI where they shared (via Games Jouhou) new gameplay, details, and more.

Around the 31:00 mark, you can see new footage of the PlayStation 4 version of the game (featured above). Near the 46:00 mark, you’ll get to see new footage of the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.

A new feature named the “Restrictive Play” mode was announced. This is for players looking for greater challenge, where you can pick one out of four restrictions to limit your abilities in-game. An example was given where you can’t buy items in shops – so you’ll have to rely on crafting or obtaining loot.

There are at least 20 villages and towns in the game, with some described as having Japanese and one even Arabic themes to it. The Japanese village is near a volcano, and has some hot springs with some fire themes to boot.

Series creator Yuji Horii said he and the staff recently took a visit to the iconic Machu Picchu in Peru, and were so inspired that some of the game world is inspired by that region.

The white creature found on the Dragon Quest Life website was somewhat teased, however Horii said that for now its purpose will have to still be kept a secret to avoid spoiling things.

Finally, the game’s Nintendo Switch version was further teased, where producer Yosuke Saito said they don’t have any information to share on the Switch version right now, as it’s not the right time. “You know it is with grown-up reasoning,” Saito joked. “When the right time comes we’ll say something.”

Yuji Horii followed up by saying “there are various reasons behind this.”

Dragon Quest XI is currently set for a release on both PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on July 29th in Japan.
