Nintendo Switch’s Included Joy-Con Grip Doesn’t Charge Controllers

If you’re looking to charge your Joy-Cons while playing on the TV with Nintendo Switch, prepare to be disappointed.

Unlike the Joy-Con Charging Grips Nintendo is selling for 30$, the Joy-Con Grip included with every Nintendo Switch will not charge the system’s controllers. This leaves the console itself as the only way to charge the controllers out of the box. It’s worth mentioning Nintendo says the batteries last 20 hours.

Unlike most of the accessories for the Switch, however, the Charging Grip seems to be more decently priced. The Joy-Con Charging Grip releases with the console itself March 3rd.

Charge last for 20 hours, it charges when docked on the screen. Sounds like the problem is already solved.

Trying to make a problem out of something that isn’t there. Spending $30 for something that the console itself already does is just wasting money and a luxury. No reason to include that in the box.

These Switch complaints are really getting nitpicky. I understand people hate Nintendo, but come on.

Here’s hoping they clear things up before March as far as their service goes at least, I can survive not knowing about peripherals which are ultimately not too necessary (all I need is a Pro Controller at most for the first six months I think).

They really need to tell us about their operating system and all that stuff. It seems like Miis might be phased out for one thing since Miiverse isn’t returning. More importantly, all of their digital purchase stuff and how other regions interact with the stores (I want it to be on the PS3’s level).

Aside from that, thanks for agreeing though it might have been my fault for making a half knee jerk reaction to the title.

They last 20 hours and can be charged just by putting them on the system in the dock when you are done.

If you are gaming longer than 20 hours in a single session you may have bigger issues you’ll want to consider working on.

The problem is that those controllers must be attached to the screen, and the screen must be attached to the dock un order to charge. But in that case, it could be a little difficult to play on that time. On PS4 at least se just need to connect a cable and still be able to play

For a lot of the items I would agree but a charging unit for the remotes which given how fucking expensive extra controllers are and how little you get with the console that is the thing that really shows how much they want to screw money out of everyone at every turn. 35. totenglocke
    totenglocke
    January 17, 2017 at 2:05 pm

No, the Switch drops to 3 hours for very demanding games. Playing virtual console games will get longer battery life than high end Switch games. Every battery powered device is like that. Nintendo controllers (except for the damn Wii U gamepad) have always had great battery life, there’s no reason to doubt the 20 hour claim, especially if you ever used the “infinite battery” Wii U pro controller.

  37. lucben999

The way I understand it, you’d only want to dock the controller on the screen when you’re undocking the console itself so that in runs on batteries. Charging the controllers then would drain the console’s battery so it wouldn’t make much sense IMO.

You’d have to remember to leave the controllers docked to the screen every time you stop playing and turn off the console.

  38. Brimfyre
    Brimfyre
    January 17, 2017 at 2:32 pm

How is that any different than remembering to dock the controllers on a separate “charging station” when you are done playing?

  39. lucben999
    lucben999
    January 17, 2017 at 2:32 pm

I imagine a lot of people will just use the grip as a controller, play their session and then turn off the console and leave the grip lying around instead of detaching the controllers and attaching them to the screen again. So they’re likely to end up with an empty battery on their controller and no way to charge it while playing.

  40. Kiwi Hoy
    Kiwi Hoy
    January 17, 2017 at 2:33 pm

If they were gonna forget to plug it in the way it works now, they’d forget to plug it in any other way too

So what you’re saying is that what most people want is a controller that’s just constantly powered by a cable they can use while playing?

Like, a wired controller that we’ve had for decades?

  41. lucben999
    lucben999
    January 17, 2017 at 2:36 pm

It’s not. The problem is that remembering that is not a requirement on other consoles, so it’s likely to catch people off guard. If you forget to charge and run out of battery with a PS4 controller, you can just plug it and charge it while you play, but with the switch you’d have to dock the controllers to the screen and the screen has to be docked to the console, so how do charge while you play if you forgot? It would be pretty awkward, you’d have to grab the whole console with the dock and use that as a controller. I’d be pretty funny actually to see people playing with Switch consoles on their laps because they forgot to leave their controllers charging.

  43. Kiwi Hoy
    Kiwi Hoy
    January 17, 2017 at 2:39 pm

But you just said people will forget to plug these things in when they aren’t using them so the detachable nature of the cable becomes meaningless, surely?

Or is this just a thinly veiled attempt to whine about Nintendo simply because it’s Nintendo?

  44. lucben999
    lucben999
    January 17, 2017 at 2:42 pm

You’re being deliberately obtuse. Obviously they would forget to plug the cables and when the controller runs out of battery they just plug it in and keep playing. With the Switch however you have to dock the controllers to the screen and have the screen docked to the console for it to charge. That’s why those grips should ideally come with a detachable cable by default.

It’s gonna take a lot more than that to ditch WIndows. The unfortunate fact is that with a market share floating around 90%, Windows has no real competitors in the OS market. Linux has never been appealing to non-technical businesses or average consumers, and unless some major disruption happens that would make some other OS outside of Windows’ decades-old ecosystem desirable enough it’s probably going to remain that way.

We are talking what? A tiny PCB with a Mini/Micro USB port and some wires? That’s what 25c worth of parts in bulk, $1-2 factoring in assembly and logistics? Cause all the actual charging hardware should be built into the joycons themselves. I certainly hope the $30 controller adapter at least comes with an actual power supply but knowing Nintendo …… prolly not.

“How little you get with the console” compared to what exactly?

How many consoles come packed with more than a controller, any necessary cables, and maybe a game?

How is this any different than needing a separate charging dock or ‘charge ‘n play’ kit for other systems?

Its not, those are optional additions for your personal convenience, otherwise your stuck tethering yourself and the controller to the console because they only provide you with a 6ft usb cable out of the box.

From what I’ve gathered, Treehouse isn’t just one department, its a code-name for where their top-secret stuff is worked on.

So in a way, its more like a security clearance level.

They’re pretty highly regarded as well. Did you know they’re the reason we even got Animal Crossing?

So lot of the stuff people complain about is just their own style of writing, the one-liners, memes, and such.

So if anything, Nintendo is only really guilty of thinking their style works for almost anything. That may be due to a language barrier issue between branches.
