Oh here’s one: Why’d you drop the Vita version in the west? Digital only, the profit margins more than makeup for it.

I realize the PS4 version runs better and loads faster, but this is the kinda game that just fits Vita better. Maximum comfy and all that jazz.

Why was there no physical edition of the game? At 40$ digital it was sent out to die.

i really doubt it would sell enough to coup the costs of going physical

Vita is a dead system in the west. And being digital only didn’t negatively affect the sells on PC and PS4.

Vita’s software attach rate is actually among the highest (percentage/ratio wise) among any console. And that’s world-wide, not just Japan.

My complaint isn’t against digital only, hell, I’m a “Steamgoy” or what the fuck ever on PC. My complaint is simply that the Vita version never came over period. You’d figure with the translation already done, and saving money specifically by being digital only they actually could have made a pretty penny on Western Vita sales. Nothing crazy I’m sure, but more than enough to cover it’s costs and then some. Profit margins on digital titles are way higher than physical after all.

I see a lot of vita games coming to PS4 and PC only in the west so I think it’s Sony either forcing them to or making it hard for vita games to come over.

Sole physical vita games I’m still keeping are games that do not require DLCs (besides cosmetics unless we’re talking about SK or VD) or necessary patches, as well as games (Atelier Arland and Dusk trilogy, Neptune, Moero, FFX, Ys VII, SSD, etc.) and VNs that are quite heavy in size if I pirate and install their digital counterparts.

Digital was pretty bad stuff on Vita before piracy came out (finally) and you dont often really get rewarded for buying physical either (especially if first prints). I remember having 10GB occupied by patches/updates

Well no shit the sales would be better in japan. But it sold more on PC in the west than Vita in japan. For niche game to sell more than 5,000 on PC is great. Selling this well on PC I know that the sequel will be on the system. I hope we get a sequel.

    Learn to understand English, cupcake.

When somebody says “Any volunteers?” they don’t mean if there are any volunteers on the planet, but rather in the near vicinity. Context matters.

Also I was not quoting you. If I was I would’ve used quotation marks. This is how grammar works.

It is you who should learn the difference between quoting someone and saying your interpretation of their words – please read my above post – you might learn that difference. It’s a thing called semantics. I’d assume you are competent enough to use Google, but apparently not.

5k for niche games is still abysmal by any standards. At $60 they would only make $210,000. Only the most budgeted of budgeted titles will do well with those figures. IE 1-2 person teams.

  46. Phasmatis75

    November 5, 2016 at 6:26 am

A lot of money is meaningless if it doesn’t cover development, marketing, and related costs (building, computers, electricity, water, etc). Tha’ts why small indi games that are well made by a group of 3-4 people can easily turn a profit and are huge hits if they sell only 1 million, but games like Tomb Raider are flops at 6 million.

Idealy they’re going to want to sell about what they sold. It works out better because of the currency exchange rate.

“Do you now see that it being digital only not negatively affected it sells?” – what are you talking about? The consoles’ main market has always been physical and this is quite obvious given that the physical releases in Japan alone dwarf the PC sales. It selling OK on PC (or great by your definition) is no indicator that the lack of physical edition on console didn’t damage its sales, since the PC sales have been digital only for a while now.

No I don’t agree. I didn’t imply that. I just said that this particular game would’ve sold better if it had a physical release. The Japanese physical sales vs the PC digital sales demonstrate that quite clearly.

You don’t own the software, but you do own the disc with the snapshot of the software.

You can resell and trade them – something you can’t do with digital games, which gives you more ownership of the product.

Plus you said it yourself – DRM is quite limiting and Steam is pretty much a DRM platform.

The disk getting cracked becomes worthless so you have to rebuy the game again. And not only are disks so fragile but sometimes the consoles scratch the disk.
