Shigeru Miyamoto: Mario is Only 24 Years Old

mario-10-01-16-1

A recently re-surfaced interview between Nintendo and their very own Shigeru Miyamoto (via Ars Technica) has revealed quite possibly the biggest scandal of 2016: Mario’s real age.

According to his creator, Mario is only twenty four or twenty five years old. “I think it was fortuitous that we didn’t put any restrictions on Mario as a character,” Miyamoto said.

“Normally when you create a character and present him to the world, all the details get filed in: what’s his favorite colour? what kind of food does he like to eat?” Now here comes the shocker:

“But aside from the fact that he’s about 24-25 years old, we didn’t define anything else,” Miyamoto explained. “When we make a game we take care not to add incongruence to that game’s world. With that caveat, I’d like to keep using Mario in future games.”

Mario first appeared in the original Donkey Kong, back in 1981. Since then, he has appeared in over 200 properties, and his games have sold over half a billion copies worldwide.

How do you guys feel about Mario not being a middle-aged man? Sound off in the comments below!

Never got the impression he was a middle-aged man.

So…I have no strong feelings about this whatsoever.

Reminds me of the time they announced that Toads are unisex. No one ever thought about it, but Nintendo decided to tell us anyway.

Huh. I would’ve figured early 30’s at the least. I don’t know how to feel about Mario being the exact same age as me.

I mean, without that moustache he would have a baby face so I guess that makes sense…?

    People actually did though.

Nothing profound, basically just how do you tell them apart, are they all guys/gals, and so on, but people even wrote into Nintendo Power about it back in the day.

Then of course there’s Toadette, who’s obviously female, that didn’t help.

Like telling him to get off my grass as I nurse a piece of caramel hard candy.

So what it’s not like currently Mario has much of a character anyway, they made him as bland as possible after Sunshine, the RPGs and Smash are the only games where he displays any real character. He did have a bit of character in 64 (and maybe Sunshine I can’t remember) but that had to go away because we can’t have people being offended by it!

Aw, I wanted to think of Mario as some 40-something year old dude.

    …I mean, I still can. So…

I don’t really understand. He’s never had a personality other than being super happy and energetic. Charles Martinet does an excellent job of carrying that over with his super hyper Yah! Yahooo! voices.

    That is untrue.

It was some SJW at Gamespot who made the story up. What the guy actually said is that toads weren’t ever designed with a gender in mind until Toadette.

I’m talking about the voice clips he had in 64, this got dialed in later games despite “It’s a me Mario” being famous all he does now is like you said nothing but “yah!” and “yahoo”.
